Quirky Baojun Yep EV SUV Officially Launched - Features Refrigerated "FRUNK"
Last month, we reported that the Baojun Yep, a mini electric SUV from China, is set to come with several quirky features. Amongst which is a rear mounted digital screen presented in similar style as smartwatch - a la Apple Watch. Now, the Baojun Yep officially launched yesterday and, unsurprisingly, the quirkiness continues.
300 x 256mm Rear Mounted Digital Screen
The Baojun Yep is the first time amongst its contemporaries - both Chinese and not - to feature a refrigerated front truck (frunk) with a respectable 35-litre capacity. This feature would be useful for road trips as it lets you lug perishable items like food and drinks. Indeed, this is one very cool feature - all puns intended.
35-litre refrigerated "Frunk"
With its official launch in its Chinese home market, we finally have official retail prices for the Baujun Yep as well. The base model is priced at RMB79,800 (approx. RM52,000), which is way below our initial estimates of RM64,000. Said model even boasts a somewhat respectable CLTC range of 303 KM too.
Similar to the Suzuki Jimny, this Chinese-made rival of sorts measures 3,380 MM long with a 2,110 MM wheelbase, 1,685 MM wide, and 1,721mm tall. Though relatively compact in dimensions, it does sport a large 715-litre cargo space(with rear seats folded) plus a relatively light weight of just 1,006 KG.
Powering the Baojun Yep is a rear mounted single motor outputting 50 kW (roughly 67 HP) and 149 NM. Said motor is juiced by a 28.1 kWh Guangxi Ningfu battery unit that supports DC fast charging inputs to allow 30-80% charges in just 35 minutes. This mini-SUV’s top speed, however, is limited to a rather conservative 100km/h.
Dash able to mount extra gadgets easily
At launch, Baojun Yep buyers can even opt for an “off-road” package which adds a retro roof rack 30 KG load rating, as well as off-road tyres shod on its standard 15-inch wheels. As for the rear mounted “smart-watch” screen mentioned, which is targeted at young drivers who would like to express their personalities, it is also an option priced at RMB1,519 (RM1,000).
In terms of safety, the Baojun Yep is laced with a bevy of active driver assistance (ADAS) features developed by leading tech firm DJI. Key amongst which include automated self-parking ability, Lane Centering Control (LCC), as well as a 360-degree camera. With that, it’s easy to see that this tiny, quirky EV SUV offers quite the full package.
What do you folks think of this quirky, tech-savvy and perhaps relatively more affordable Suzuki Jimny rival from China then? Hit the comments below - and our social pages - with your thoughts…
