Updated L640 Range Rover Gains Both MHEV & PHEV Powertrains

Initially made its global debut back in 2021, the L640 Land Rover Range Rover is due for an update for the 2024 model year (2024MY). This update sees all variants of the fifth-gen Range Rover now sporting electrified powertrains, albeit in different forms.

For the 2024MY, a total of four powertrains are now offered to the Range Rover, consisting of two plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and two mild-hybrid (MHEV) ones. Starting off with the PHEV variants, the 3.0-litre inline-six mill is now mated to a peppier single electric motor rated at 218 PS (215 HP/160 kW).
This, in turn, grants the two baseline models – the P460e and P550e – a total system output of 460 PS (454 HP) and 550 PS (542 HP) respectively. Prior to this upgrade, both models were known as P440e and P510e, which reflect the models’ pre-update total system output.

All in all, this power hike grants the P550e variant a 0-60 MPH (96 KM/H) sprint finish of 4.8 seconds – faster than the old model’s 5.2 seconds record time. Apart from faster acceleration, the updated PHEV variant also gets a claimed EV range of 121 KM.
The automaker has not mentioned any updates pertaining to both models’ battery pack. For reference, the pre-update L640 PHEV models sport a 38.2-kWh battery pack that supplied up to 100 KM of all-electric range.

The 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 engine used by the P530 Range Rover L640
Moving to the two top-specced MHEV variants, the BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine is now mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This addition boosts up the total system output for the new P615 variant to 615 PS (670 HP) and 750 NM, while being able to match the P530’s fuel economy. Speaking of P530, this variant retains its 530 PS (523 HP) power output, but offers better fuel economy compared to the pre-update version.

On board, each 2024MY Range Rover will get Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) latest 13.1-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system. This new system features a simpler layout, where JLR claims drivers can access 80% of its functions by only tapping the homescreen twice.

On the safety front, this mid-life update grants the L640 with a new Country Road Assist (CRA) system to allow the use of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) on twisty B-roads. Working just like the normal ACC, this new system automatically adjusts the vehicle speed depending on the severity of the corners and turns.
Similar capabilities have also been added to the car’s Terrain Response 2 off-roading system allowing drivers to select one of four vehicle speeds for when traversing through rough surfaces.

The 2024MY Range Rover L640 however, still retains its pre-updated starting price of £103,720 (RM585,087). However, said price can easily go up or even doubled, as JLR is introducing new bespoke program for this model.

Apart from new powertrains and tech updates, JLR has also launched new SV Bespoke services for the L640 Range Rover model. Aiming towards the upper-echelon of its clientele, this bespoke service offers customers with up to 391 trim colours and over 230 body paint options with varieties of finish, ranging from satin to gloss.

Beyond the colour options, customers can also create custom scripts for both the front hood and rear tailgate, made of a wide range of precious metals, including pure gold. Elsewhere, other bespoke options like materials for both upholstery and veneer trims, personalised embroidery or marking, are all available for customers to select.

The new SV Bespoke experience is currently offered to both the SV variants of the 2024MY Range Rover, as well as the Autobiography SUV.
