1,063 EV Charging Stations Currently Operational in Malaysia – MITI
While the local EV scene saw several new models coming this year, the same can’t be said about the charging infrastructure and network around Malaysia, as the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) revealed that only 1,063 EV charging stations are currently operational nationwide.
MITI Deputy Minister YB Liew Chin Tong (second from right)
Speaking during Tesla Malaysia’s launch event today, MITI’s deputy minister YB Liew Chin Tong said, “As of today, it’s at 1,063. The target based on the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint issued by the government in 2020 is to have 10,000 charging stations by 2025, of which 1,000 will be DC (fast) chargers and 9,000 will be (regular) AC chargers.”

While said figure barely broke the 1,000 mark, the deputy minister insists that the government will keep continuing with its Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint plant, which sees the Federal Government targeting over 10,000 EV charging stations that will be operational throughout Malaysia by 2025.
“So that (10,000 charging stations by 2025) is the goal and I hope with a lot more push and facilitation from the government, and synchronisation of policies, we can see the target met by 2025," the deputy minister added.
When asked about the interim targeted milestone for 2024, YB Liew did not provide any specific figures or any amendments will be made about said target.
“It will take some time. There is some facilitation and synchronisation happening,” he added.
Tesla Superchargers at Pavilion KL are among of the first ones to be opened in Malaysia
In case you missed it, Tesla has officially arrived in Malaysia, launching its first-ever model to our market today, the Tesla Model Y. Aside from that, the American-based EV marque is also serious in developing and building EV infrastructure nationwide, with the firm announcing that a total of 10 Tesla Supercharger stations will be built around the Peninsula Malaysia.

Aside from Tesla, other marques like BMW and Porsche have also stepped-up their game in providing and building better EV infrastructures to match with the surge of demands of EVs and the flock of new EV models coming into our country. For example, BMW Group Malaysia has collaborated with few local EV charging solutions providers like ChargeSini to build its own dedicated charging network.
With the EV market exponentially growing day by day, it is hoped that several key players will do the same in racking up the number of EV charging stations in Malaysia.
