Audi EP4 : A 1971 NSU Prinz 4 Reimagined - Decked Out & e-Tron Powered
Twelve apprentices from Audi's Four Rings division started on a project to electrify a classic car to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Audi facility in Neckarsulm. The end result of their efforts was released on July 8 and was dubbed the "EP4". The EP4 is a modified NSU Prinz 4, which was manufactured in Neckarsulm by NSU Motorenwerke from 1961 until 1973.
The apprentices wanted to build an automobile that not only looked fantastic, but also paid homage to the facility's anniversary. They began with a 1971 NSU Prinz 4 that had been out of service for some years. They resurrected the vehicle and fitted it with a new electric drivetrain.
The project was a collaborative effort, with apprentices from automotive mechatronics, bodywork, vehicle construction mechanics, and painting courses working together through numerous team meetings to discuss the project's progress, challenges and steps. Key amongst was the task to restore the car's body, addressing rust spots and ensuring a solid foundation for the conversion.
At the same time, the future automotive mechanics focused on the motor, batteries, and suspension while body and paint professionals worked on the chassis and outside shell. The stock dated two-cylinder gasoline engine was replaced with a 240 horsepower electric motor obtained from a 2020 Audi e-tron. The motor was powered by the batteries from the plug-in hybrid Audi Q7 TFSI e-quattro. The battery was housed beneath the front hood, where the fuel tank previously resided.
The exterior design of the EP4 attempted to preserve the original lines of the NSU Prinz. The apprentices kept the distinctive shoulder and roof lines, as well as the front and rear lights. The sheet metal was thoroughly restored, with rust removed and Audi Suzuka Grey and Brilliant Black colour applied. The "150" anniversary inscription was placed on the vehicle's flanks.
The chassis and bodywork were also extensively modified to handle the huge performance upgrade. For the foundation, a modified floor pan from an Audi A1 was used same as well for the brakes and axles. The EP4’s body was also enlarged and modified to include muscular fenders created with 3D printing technology under the supervision of Audi Design department. The EP4 was also equipped with wider wheels and high-performance tyres for maximum grip during acceleration and corners.
A Signal Yellow rear wing was affixed to the roll cage accessed via the rear window, giving it an aggressive, unique and sporty appearance. The roll cage stands out against the black surfaces of the cabin. The seats used for this project were "Recaro Podium" buckets, and the dated instrument cluster and displays were replaced by a single-board computer and accompanying screen that served as the speedometer, onboard computer, and diagnostic tool.
The apprentices implemented their training expertise throughout the project where sophisticated technology like 3D printing and carbon fibre material was used for the front hood. The EP4 project provided an opportunity for the apprentices to showcase their talents, collaborate as Audi’s Technical Development team and meet an ambitious deadline. The EP4 project shows Audi's commitment to innovation and sustainability through a blend of craftsmanship, enthusiasm, and cutting-edge technology.
