Stellantis Reveals New EV Platform For Electric Cars And SUVs

Stellantis has unveiled the upcoming STLA Medium electric vehicle platform, promising the best energy efficiency and range in its class.
The platform is expected to underpin several highly anticipated models in the second half of the 2020s, including the next Alfa Romeo Giulia and the new Peugeot 3008 in 2024.
STLA Medium allows for vehicles ranging in length from 4.3m to 4.9m in the C and D segments, with wheelbases ranging from 2.7m to 2.9m.
According to Stellantis, models based on the platform will be either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with the latter employing a dual-motor setup. The company also stated that the platform has "engineered-in flexibility" for propulsion, implying that it will eventually support rear-wheel-drive models if there is enough demand for them.
Alfa Romeo, for example, may push to keep the Giulia's standard variant rear-wheel-drive in order to maintain the model's sporting character. The Giulia Quadrifoglio, on the other hand, will use a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain with outputs of up to 1000bhp, as previously reported by Autocar.
According to Stellantis, cars based on STLA Medium will have power outputs ranging from 215bhp to 382bhp, but Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato's previous comments about a 1000bhp Giulia indicate that the platform has significantly more potential.
Battery packs in STLA Medium vehicles will be up to 98kWh in size, with larger 'Performance' units aiming for a range of more than 435 miles. On the WLTP test cycle, the standard size will provide ranges of more than 310 miles.
Stellantis also touts the platform's 4.4 mile per kWh efficiency. A Volkswagen ID 4 Pure Performance (with a 52kWh battery) is rated at 3.8mpkWh, as are Kia EV6 rear-drive variants.
As new battery technologies become available, these figures may improve. STLA Medium includes support for future chemistries, including the long-awaited solid-state technology, according to Stellantis.

It has also been designed to be lighter and more manoeuvrable than the outdated PSA and FCA platforms that underpin much of Stellantis' current lineup.
STLA Medium will be installed in two million vehicles per year, including the popular Peugeot 3008 and Vauxhall Grandland. Its profile also fits as a replacement for several vehicles in the conglomerate's current lineup, including the Citroen C5 Aircross, DS 7, and Peugeot 508.
