Mazda Motor Corporation has unveiled its latest concept car, the MAZDA ICONIC SP, at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. This innovative concept car represents a novel approach to compact sports cars, aiming to adapt to the evolving automotive landscape and cater to the desires of enthusiasts who have a profound love for driving.
The MAZDA ICONIC SP incorporates Mazda's distinctive two-rotor rotary EV system as its powertrain. This system, known for its compact design, offers exceptional layout flexibility, contributing to a low centre of gravity that greatly enhances the car's driving performance. Moreover, the vehicle's batteries are charged through a sustainable and recyclable energy source, while the two-rotor rotary engine, which serves as a power generator, runs on carbon-neutral fuel.
The car's striking Viola Red colour, dubbed a "concept colour," encapsulates Mazda's corporate philosophy of "enriching life-in-motion for those we serve." It reflects the company's deep commitment to cherishing the essence of automotive passion.
Masahiro Moro, Mazda's Representative Director, President, and CEO, reaffirmed Mazda’s mission as a car-loving company that aims to provide enriching mobility experiences to their customers. Mazda envisions a future where everyone can proudly declare their love for cars and will collaborate with partners who share this vision.
The MAZDA ICONIC SP’s design emphasises a low centre of gravity to convey a sense of exceptional driving performance. Placing the lightweight and compact rotary engine in the car's centre has led to a lowered hood. The rotary power plant would output 365HP.
It would measure 4,180mm in length, 1,850mm in width and 1,150mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,590mm. The car is expected to weigh 1,450KG and sport a power to weight ratio of 3.9.
The two-rotor rotary electric vehicle system is said to be scalable and is able to accept a range of fuel which includes hydrogen, and produce energy using fuel that is carbon neutral. Driving is almost carbon-neutral when the battery is charged using renewable energy.
The two-rotor rotary EV system's high output, low centre of gravity, and about 50:50 weight distribution combine to produce an exceptional level of driving performance. This sports automobile can be used to provide power for outdoor activities and in emergencies.
The exterior body colour, "VIOLA RED," aligns with Mazda's aspiration to "cherish the colour red." It embodies their corporate philosophy of enriching the lives of those they serve, delivering a vivid hue with shades that accentuate the car's captivating shape.
