Next-Gen BMW X2 Coupe SUV Bows In with New Electric Version
The all-new, second-gen BMW X2 coupe SUV is finally here!
Making headlines across the globe today is the all-new, second generation of the BMW X2, following several teasers in the past week or so. Arriving in a new and sportier coupe SUV form, the new X2 is now offered in an all-electric form, known as the iX2.
Starting off with the biggest changes, the new X2 drops its predecessor’s lifted hatchback look in favour of a coupe SUV crossover form. Measuring 200 MM longer, 21 MM wider and 64 MM taller than its predecessor, the new X2 is also noticeably bulkier, with its overall dimensions, matching with its less-sporty twin, the BMW X1.

Moving on to its front part, the new X2’s face now comes with larger and wider signature kidney grille design, which is now offered with an optional ring of LED light – dubbed as Iconic Glow. Said grille is flanked by a pair of familiar-looking headlights derived from the X1, featuring similar dual-LED lighting signatures.
On the souped-up X2 M35i shown here, said new grille is donned with an M badge, while hosting active cooling flaps that automatically close when not required, improving the X2’s aerodynamics. On the all-electric iX2, however, the front grille is completely sealed off for better aerodynamic performance – a bid to also extend its maximum travel range.
The new X2's swooping roofline garners it with a pretty stellar aerodynamic performance
As we mentioned earlier, the new X2 now arrives in a new coupe SUV form, granting it a sporty and sleek roofline. Aside from that, the new X2 also gets extra underbody aero work, which pairs up with its sleek silhouette to garner a pretty stellar drag coefficient (C.d) rate of 0.25.
At the rear, the new X2’s rakish rear windscreen ends rather abruptly at its tailgate, with a ducktail-style spoiler placed at the end. Apart from the stunning LED taillights design, both the X2 M35i and iX2 also get a pretty huge rear bumper accent that is shaped to emulate a rear diffuser. However, we’d reckon this application works better with the X2 M35i, as said part is complemented with M’s signature quad tailpipes.
On board, both the X2 and iX2 features a pretty familiar cabin design, featuring the latest BMW iDrive dual-display setup consisting of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a larger 10.7-inch touch infotainment screen. Running on the latest BMW Operating System 9, said infotainment unit comes standard BMW’s new Airconsole service, allowing users to play mobile games and access several digital streaming services.
As for the comfort bits, the sporty X2 M35i gets several M parts, including semi-bucket M-badged front seats, sporty M steering wheel, as well as lightweight Alcantara upholstery on its seats, front dash, and several other trims. On the other hand, the tamer iX2 makes do with less sporty front seats with ventilated function, as well as two-tone leather upholstery option.
Both the new iX2 and X2 underpin the same ULK2 platform as the new X1
On the mechanical front, both the X2 and iX2 share the same UKL2 platform as its straight-backed twin. For selected global markets like the US, the petrol-gouging version will be available in two flavours, namely the baseline X2 xDrive28i and a souped-up X2 M35i xDrive.
The former gets its motivation from the same 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged mill found in the X1, delivering 241 HP and 400 NM. Said four-pot mill is mated to a seven-speed DCT gearbox, which facilitates power deliveries to all its four wheels (AWD).
Next-gen BMW X2 M35i arrives as the most potent variant of the coupe SUV
Meanwhile, the souped-up X2 M35i xDrive makes do with the same 2.0-litre 4-cyl TwinPower Turbo mill used on the X1 M35i – which is also the peppiest four-pot mill ever produced by BMW. Outputting 312 HP and 400 NM, this TwinPower mill features M-specific enhancements, allowing the X2 M35i to propel from nought to 96 KM/H (60 MPH) in 5.2 seconds.
The all-electric BMW iX2 will arrive in a single xDrive 30 guise
Moving on to the iX2, this EV coupe SUV will initially be available in a single xDrive30 guise. Featuring a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup, the iX2 boasts a total system output of 309 HP (230 kW) and 494 NM, allowing it to cruise from nought to 100 KM/H in 5.6 seconds and a capped V-max of 180 KM/H.
Juice is provided by a 64.8-kWh battery pack, which is good enough to garner the iX2 xDrive 30 with a maximum WLTP range of 449 KM. As for charging, said battery pack supports AC 22 kW charging method, which fully-charges the battery in 3 hours and 45 minutes. Meanwhile, the iX2 supports DC fast charging at a not-so-impressive maximum rate of 130 kW, allowing it to be charged from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes.
Moreover, the iX2 also boasts adaptive regenerative braking system which can actively adjust the braking force according to traffic and driving conditions. This system is capable of supplying up to 120 kW of juice back to the battery pack when braking, with its strength and intensity can be manually adjusted via the car’s infotainment system.
The next-gen BMW X2 will make its first public debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show
Set to be manufactured at BMW Group Plant Regensburg in native Germany, the next-gen BMW X2 is poised to make its first public debut at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show (JMS) 2023, happening in Tokyo later on Oct 26. Deliveries for the ICE-powered X2 is expected to commence later in March 2024 for selected global markets including the US.
Surprisingly, the all-electric iX2 won’t be available for the US market, with said model poised to make its way to several European and Asian markets later in 2024.
