PEKEMA Wants MITI To Raise Yearly Quota Of Used Import Cars

The Malaysian Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association (PEKEMA) has submitted an application to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) to raise the yearly quota of used import cars from 35,000 to 50,000 units while maintaining the import fee at RM10,000 per unit.
According to PEKEMA President Datuk Mohamed Nazari Noordin, all stakeholders in the imported car industry, as well as the downstream sector, stand to benefit from the increase in imports.
In addition to generating revenue for Miti through vehicle import fees, Nazari believes the move will increase economic generation beyond the two billion ringgit contributed annually by the vehicle industry import.

He clarified that the number of AP holders has gone from 100 to 300 as a result of the government's policy, which introduced the Open AP Policy. Because of this, the 35,000 annual AP allotment is not enough to meet the needs of every PEKEMA member.
"I sincerely hope that MITI will approve the application to increase used imported vehicles from 15,000 to 50,000 units per year in order to provide more room for deep growth in the car country vehicle market."
In terms of sales percentage, the MAA's TIV of 725,000 for 2023 is only 6.8%. Furthermore, not every vehicle owned by a PEKEMA member may be sold in the year of registration.

Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), stated that his ministry will improve the plan to raise the annual production of used import cars from 35,000 to 50,000 units.
For that purpose, MITI, in collaboration with Pekema and the Ministry of Finance (MOF), will conduct an evaluation based on the most recent data.
"The Ministry will refine and will work with Pekema to look for the basis of justification why this level needs to be reviewed," he stated.

Therefore, the matter needs to be discussed with the MOF and MITI will make decisions based on the most recent data promptly.
The 42nd PEKEMA Annual General Meeting also saw the resignation of Datuk Hj. Zainuddin Bin Abd Rahman, who has presided over PEKEMA for over ten years.
