The Malaysian Association of Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders (PEKEMA), through its subsidiary Central Auto Distributors Bhd (CADB), has taken up the distributorship for the Chinese brand DongFeng.

Moving forward, CADB also inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NexV Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (NMSB) as their CKD partner to assemble right-hand-drive DongFeng cars in Malaysia.

Based on our understanding, DongFeng will also be setting up a regional hub in Malaysia to handle businesses in the RHD market. As for CADB’s direction, they will solely focus on EVs and hybrid models, and it also plans to launch three additional models in 2025: an MPV, a mini SUV, and a full-sized SUV.

The first model to be marketed here by CADB is the subcompact electric hatchback, the DongFeng Box S31, known as the Dongfeng Nammi 01 in its home market. This model was built to offer a balance of affordability and practicality.

CariCarz.com recently had the opportunity to view one of the five pre-production versions of the Dongfeng Box S31 at its HQ in Cyberjaya. These units have been brought in to fine-tune their ride and handling to fit Malaysian roads. As it is still a pre-production model, some parts of the Box S31, such as the headlights, still carry the Nammi branding.

According to CADB, they will offer both variants available in China: the Standard Range model and the Long Range model. However, key emphasis will be placed on the latter. Both variants are powered by a single front-wheel-drive (FWD) motor, rated at 94 HP (70 kW) and 160 NM, sitting on the Dongfeng Quantum Architecture S3 400-volt platform. The top speed claimed is 140KM/H.

The Standard Range model is equipped with a 31.45-kWh LFP battery pack, offering a maximum EV range of 330 KM (CLTC), and supports AC charging at 6.6 kW and DC fast charging at 76 kW. The Long Range model features a larger 42.3-kWh battery pack, extending the EV range to 430 KM (CLTC), and supports AC charging at 6.6 kW and DC fast charging at 87 kW. All variants will support V2L functionality.

Although the Box S31 appears small in pictures, it is about the size of the BYD Dolphin, which it will compete directly against. The Box S31 measures 4,030 MM long with a 2,660 MM wheelbase, 1,810 MM wide and 1,570 MM tall. In comparison, the BYD Dolphin is 4,290 MM long with a 2,700 MM wheelbase, 1,770 MM wide and 1,570 MM tall. It will also feature a 326-litre cargo space, expandable to 945 litres with the seats down.

Having seen the Box S31 up close, we can attest that its outlook is arguably much more desirable than the BYD Dolphin, and it seems to  be marketed towards the female buyer demographic. This is thanks to its colour usage inside and out, coupled with small touches such as the “handbag” strap-inspired pull-out glove box design.

Additionally, the Box S31 distinguishes itself with stylish design elements such as frameless doors with flush door handles and unique triangular LED headlight and taillight assemblies. Both the Standard and Long Range models will ride on 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels, adding to its sporty appearance.

Inside, the Box S31’s dash and door cards are lined with soft-touch leatherette material matching the seats. It will also come equipped with a 5-inch LCD instrument cluster, 12.8-inch infotainment display, and Level 2-rated ADAS. Another highlight is that the infotainment system features a Bahasa Melayu language option.

According to CADB, the DongFeng Box S31 is targeted to retail in Malaysia between RM110,000 and RM115,000 when launched in Oct 2024, with CKD plans to begin in Q3 2025.

As pre-production units of the Dongfeng Box S31 arrive in Malaysia, there is considerable anticipation about the final specifications of the local models. The agreement between PEKEMA and NMSB signifies a significant step towards increasing the availability and affordability of EVs in Malaysia.

The introduction of the Dongfeng Box S31 could mark a pivotal moment in Malaysia's EV market, offering a compelling combination of affordability, practicality, and style. As we await the final specifications, pricing, and warranty details, it remains to be seen whether this new EV hatch will live up to expectations and potentially become a game-changer in the local automotive landscape.
