Perodua is eyeing up no less than 20% of its total Malaysian sales to be driven by upcoming hybrid (HEV) and electric (EV) models by 2030.

National carmaker Perodua is in the midst of stepping up its electrification efforts through its products. In fact, Perodua President Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin recently told local press that up to 20% of its total Malaysian sales could be helmed by both hybrids (HEVs) and Electric Vehicles (EVs) by 2030.

“We’re working together with the government and other partners. We have also been selected in the new industrial plan to spearhead the development of EVs in Malaysia,” said Datuk Seri Syed Zainal during an MOC signing with the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) yesterday.

To date, Perodua has only offered one HEV model, which was the Ativa Hybrid pictured. However, only a limited amounts were available through a special 'subscription' program.

The exec further highlights the need to develop new products, and that Perodua has yet to finalise its production plans, though insiders have indicated this might kick off next year starting with the DNGA-based new D66B model. You can read about that in our recent scoop by clicking here.

As a refresher, Perodua has only offered one electrified product, that being the Ativa Hybrid. However, said model was both made in Japan by Daihatsu and offered on a limited scale via a special 'subscription' scheme that doubled up as a study and test-best.

Perodua president Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin expressed his confidence that the government's ambitions revolving EVs and NxGVs are achievable with the cooperation of all key players.

With the involvement of huge investments, he also hopes other companies will play their part in achieving the government’s target of having no less than 10,000 publicly accessible EV chargers nationwide. “The target given by the government will be a reality if all parties cooperate,” he continued.

This response likely stems from a statement issued by Minister of Investment, Trade & Industry YB Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz earlier this week where he noted the government’s aim in having EVs and HEVs account for 20% of new car sales by 2030, 50% by 2040, and 80% by 2050.

The MITI head cites these goals were borne out of the competitive edge Malaysia current holds to woo high-value investments stemming from the comprehensive local ecosystem to produce both EVs and what his ministry have dubbed as Next Generation Vehicles (NxGV).
