Porsche is upgrading its main production plant in Suttgart-Zuffenhausen to accommodate the production of future EV models

Porsche is upgrading its main production plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Germany for the future, which involves a major and extensive reconstruction work. Once this renovation work is done, Porsche’s main facility will be manufacturing the battery electric-powered versions of the next-gen 718 lineup, which includes both the Cayman and the Boxster.

These next-gen Porsche EVs will be sharing the same assembly line as its combustion-powered counterparts, as well as other Porsche models including the coveted 911 sportscar.

The upgraded Zuffenhausen plant will get several new AGVs for the two-door sportscars production line

With a construction bill totalled at around €250 million (RM1.27 billion approx.), this major upgrade will see the Zuffenhausen plant equipped with several new automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that will be used for the first time on Porsche’s two-door models that will help to boost its production volume. This is complemented by the addition of several new quality test benches along the assembly line, as well as some new logistics areas and a new high-bay rack.

Currently used on several Porsche four-door models like the Taycan EV, these new AGVs will replace the traditional assembly line, where it can accommodate more varieties of products. With a single production line now able to produce different kinds of models, this upgrade will surely help to boost the Zuffenhausen plant’s production volume, especially for the two-door sporty models.

Aside from assembly line upgrades, this major reconstruction will also see Porsche’s main plant assembling the electric motors for the new Macan EV. However, said electric crossover model won’t be manufactured here, as its production is poised to take place at Porsche's Leipzig plant instead, starting from 2024 onwards. This plant also assembles several of Porsche’s ICEs, including the V8 mill for the Panamera and Cayenne.

On the logistics side, we’ve already mentioned that the upgraded Zuffenhausen plant will get additional logistics areas with a new high-bay rack. This includes the expansion of its current logistics area that is located within the plant’s main body shop, plus a new logistics building located at the former Porsche Centre site. Once completed in 2025, this new logistics area will have two-storey high-bay racks that will supply all the essential parts for the Taycan and other future EV models.

The upgraded Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen plant will be one of Porsche's main EV production hub in the future

With reconstruction works already underway as we speak, Porsche’s main Zuffenhausen plant is set to be fully-upgraded by the middle of this decade, where it will be one of the marque’s main EV production hubs. As we mentioned above, this upgraded facility will see several future Porsche EV models rolling off its production line, including the fully-electric version of the next-gen 718, Cayman and Boxster.
