The EV community is on high alert towards the new EV road tax (LKM) structure announcement this month (Dec). This was promised by Transport Minister Anthony Loke last month. However, he has now said that this will not come this year.

Many new EV buyers are awaiting this announcement ahead of their planned switch to an EV. Presently, EVs sold in Malaysia are still exempt from road tax since 2022, but will require one beginning in 2025.

Existing EV owners and potential buyers alike now have to wait a little longer as Anthony Loke says that his ministry is still outlining the draft structure of taxes for EVs, reports Malaysia Gazette.

According to Loke, several aspects in the current draft still need to be improved, hence requiring more time for completion. He however claimed that this delay would not affect current EV users as EVs are still exempted from requiring a road tax.

Loke further mentioned that the complete draft will be submitted to the EV Steering Committee first. Presently, he wants to further enhance the draft in order to offer the best possible EV road tax schedule for buyers.

The road tax exemption however only applies to battery electric vehicles (BEV) and not hybrid (HEV or PHEV) vehicles.

CariCarz.com recently published a list of EVs sold in Malaysia with a payable road tax rate if charged based on the pre-2022 road tax structure.
