Geely Radar RD6 4WD Aims To Be The Asian Cybertruck
Geely is gearing up to launch a 4WD variant of its Radar RD6 electric pickup truck in the second quarter (Q2) of this year. It’s poised to be the Chinese’s answer to the American Cybertruck which, unsurprisingly, won’t be available in China.
The RD6 pick-up truck, initially introduced as a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model in Nov 2022, would stand out in a segment that’s heavily reliant on ICE platforms - i.e. the Maxus T90 EV and the GWM Cannon.
What sets the Radar RD6 apart is its distinction as the first Chinese pick-up purposefully designed from scratch as an EV by Geely. The Radar RD6 utilises the Multiplex Attached Platform (MAP) derived from Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform - thar same base used for a string of Geely brands and products (Zeekr, smart and Lotus Cars).
Radar CEO Ling Shiquan noted during Geely's annual media conference that some key performance figures for the Radar RD6 4WD would match the Tesla Cybertruck. This includes 0-100 KM/H sprints in 4 seconds while transporting a considerable cargo load (the exact weight specifications were however not disclosed).
Ling also highlighted the RD6 4WD would have an impressive water-wading depth surpassing the Hummer EV at 813 MM.
Details regarding the RD6 4WD are still kept secret, but CarNewChina.com predicts that it would follow the route of the Zeekr 001. Should the latter pan out, it ought to harness the Zeekr’s battery pack options available - 63 kWh, 86 kWh, and 100 kWh - with a possibility to accommodate a platform maximum 140 kWh.
Furthermore, just like the all-wheel-drive Zeekr 001, it's anticipated that the permanent magnet motor currently powering the RWD variant could be duplicated for the front axle and make it 4WD.
Significantly, the RD6 4WD will boast notable enhancements over its 2WD counterpart. Included too are increased payload capacity of 865 kg (up from 430 kg) and towing capacity of 3 tons (up from 2.5 tons).
The pickup also offers numerous power outlets for external devices, which includes ability to supply up to 6 kW of electricity and hosting 12V, 220V, and 380V outlets in the truck bed. A new feature exclusive to the 4WD RD6 is the capability to directly charge other EVs.
