Report: 80% Of Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUVs Still Running Today

It is believed that up to 80% of all g-Class SUVs made by Mercedes-Benz are still running today.

In the world of cars, some cars are special because they have been there through time and still are loved by many. Arguably, one of said few, which has also attained ‘iconic’ and cult-like status, is the mighty Mercedes-Benz G-Class. 

Indeed, according to Mercedes-Benz, an astounding 80% of all G-Classes ever made are still in use today. Last year, the three-point star marque revealed that the 500,00th G-Class unit was produced, and it estimates that over 400,000 units are still in use today.

Considering that the tough off-road vehicle has been in production since 1979 - about 45 years ago - is an incredible accomplishment. Moreover, the brand says that it intends to continue producing this rugged yet luxurious off-roader, so long as demands for it continue.

Recently, the all-electric G580 with EQ Technology bowed at Auto China 2024 and marked the beginning of a new era for the G-Class - also dubbed the ‘G-Wagen’ by owners and fans alike. However, it will probably take several decades before this new electric version becomes the only ones left in use.

In regards to service life, Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG and head of the G-Class and Maybach business units, recently told Motor1.com that he anticipates the new electric G-Class to be on par with its gas-powered brothers. Schiebe also expressed optimism about the market share of the electric G580 with EQ Technology from the lineup. 

He believes that Mercedes aims to be a customer-centric company, supplying efficient and powerful V-8 engines to meet customer demands. The new electric G-Wagen opens up new opportunities for dealers, attracting customers who may not have been attracted in the past.

The 2025 model year also marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has sold the G-Class in North America with a powertrain other than a V-8 since its addition to the American lineup in 2002. 

As a refresher, the entry-level G550 has ditched its signature V8 for a turbocharged in-line 6-cyl paired with mild-hybrid tech. In turn, this variant is aimed towards customers who prefer a high-performance combustion engine powertrain. 

As for the electric G-Wagen, it is instead positioned towards those who fancy its distinct and iconic style and shape, but don't want to drive a combustion-engine G-Class anymore. KR
