Audi Integrates ChatGPT into Its On-Board Voice Assistant

Just like VW, Audi has also taken the AI route by integrating ChatGPT into its on-board voice assistance system.

The usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in automobiles is about to become more common in the years to come. Following in Volkswagen’s footsteps in implementing AI technology for its cars is fellow German compatriot Audi, which introduced ChatGPT integration into its on-board voice assistance system.

Newer Audi models like the Q6 e-tron that runs on MIB 3 infotainment system will receive this ChatGPT integration.

This ChatGPT integration will take place on some of the latest Audi models, provided that they’re currently running on the third-gen modular infotainment system (MIB 3). Unlike the many other malicious applications of AI technology, Audi insists that the ChatGPT integration will be simply used to enhance its existing assistant system that uses Microsoft Azure Open AI.

“With the seamless integration of ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications,” says Markus Keith, Audi’s vice president of interior, infotainment, and connectivity development. "In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles."

Similar to the ones on Volkswagen vehicles, Audi’s ChatGPT integration will work together with the existing voice command suite. While the built-in voice assistance usually covers predetermined tasks and commands like asking to roll down the windows or check the tyre pressure, ChatGPT will step in when passengers say something that the system doesn’t understand.

The ChatGPT integration will make its way to selected Audi models later in July this year, provided that they run on the marque’s MIB 3 infotainment system, with approximately two million models built from 2021 onward poised to receive it. In the near future, this integration will also make its way to other Audi vehicles that run on the marque’s E3 1.2 electronics architecture.
