Ford Capri Returns as an All-Electric Fastback Crossover

The iconic Ford Capri returns as an all-electric fastback crossover, featuring powertrains derived from the Explorer.
Besides Honda with the new Prelude hybrid coupe, American automaker Ford has also revived one of its most iconic nameplates this year, namely the Ford Capri. Now in 2024, the beloved fastback coupe returns with an all-electric powertrain while featuring a five-door fastback crossover body style.

The new Ford Electric Capri boasts some retro-inspired designs derived from the original Capri coupe.
Essentially a sportier version of the Ford Explorer EV SUV, the new Capri—now known as the Electric Capri—gets some design cues inspired by the original coupe, and that is despite its new crossover body style. Some retro-inspired designs present here include the black band across its front face to mimic the coupe’s front grille design, the quad LED DRLs on its headlights to evoke the Mk1 Capri’s quad-headlight setup, and the rear LED DRLs inspired by the Mk3 Capri’s tail lights.

Besides the front face and the lighting units, the new Electric Capri also comes with other retro-inspired features such as the subtle fender peaks, the oval-shaped rear windscreen, and the subtle ducktail spoiler on its tailgate to homage the sporty Capri RS3100.

On board, the Electric Capri borrows most of its equipment from the Explorer EV SUV, which comes as no surprise since both models underpin the same VW MEB platform. While tech amenities like the 14.6-inch portrait infotainment display and the overall front dash layout are derived from the Explorer, the Electric Capri still comes with some retro-inspired homage, notably its steering wheel design.

As standard, the Electric Capri gets 12-way powered and massage front seats, Capri puddle lights, dual-zone climate control, and heated and foldable side mirrors. Opting for the Premium variant gets customers some added features, including the 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, a head-up display, ambient lights, a hands-free powered tailgate, and many more.

The Electric Capri comes in two powertrain flavours, with both of them using the same VW MEB platform.
As we mentioned earlier, the new Electric Capri underpins the same VW MEB platform used on the Explorer EV SUV, as well as other Volkswagen EV models like the ID 3. The Electric Capri starts with the baseline single RWD motor variant rated at 282 HP (210 kW), allowing a decent century sprint time of 6.4 seconds. Juiced by a 77-kWh battery pack, the baseline Electric Capri RWD gets a claimed EV range of 627 KM while supporting DCFC at up to 135 kW that charges the car from 10-80% in 28 minutes.

Moving on to the dual-motor AWD model, this top-spec Electric Capri gets a bigger 79-kWh battery pack that juices its twin-motor setup rated at 335 HP (250 kW). This grants the dual-motor Capri a faster 0-100 KM/H time of 5.3 seconds, while its EV range has been cut short to 592 KM. Additionally, this model also supports faster DCFC at 185 kW, which allows a 10-80% charge to be completed in just 26 minutes.

As of now, Ford has yet to unveil the prices for the all-new Ford Electric Capri, although experts say it will be in the same region as the Explorer. For reference, the Ford Explorer EV SUV currently retails from £45,875 (RM276,516) to £53,975 (RM325,339) in the UK, so the new Electric Capri won’t likely exceed that price range.
Besides the Old Continent market, Ford also didn’t reveal any plans to introduce the new Electric Capri into other international markets like ours, with the automaker indirectly confirming that it won’t be available in North America.
