Mercedes-Benz Shifts Focus Back to ICE Amidst EV Challenges

Mercedes-Benz has reportedly recalibrated its development direction, laying heavier focus on ICE and PHEV tech.
Mercedes-Benz is reportedly revising its ambitious electrification strategy, planning significant investments in internal combustion engines (ICE) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) instead. Brand CEO Ola Källenius highlights the necessity to adapt, acknowledging that ICE will remain prevalent well into the 2030s.
This pivot includes a €14 billion (approximately RM72.6 billion) investment aimed at enhancing the three-point star marque’s existing ICE technology to meet stricter emissions standards, alongside funding for hybrid and digitalisation advancements.
This strategic shift reflects broader industry challenges, including insufficient EV infrastructure and consumer hesitation, underscoring the complex path to full electrification. Mercedes-Benz initially aimed for an all-electric lineup by 2030. However, industry-wide setbacks and overall slow consumer adoption prompted a reassessment.

The German automaker's focus now encompasses developing "high-tech combustion technology" to reduce emissions while continuing its long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. This pragmatic approach aims to balance regulatory compliance and market demands, ensuring Mercedes remains competitive in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
This decision highlights the challenges automakers face in transitioning to EVs, including supply chain issues, high production costs, and the need for substantial infrastructure investments.

Consumer hesitation and poor infrastructure were amongst the key factors cited by MBM as challenges faced by their EV products.
Additionally, Mercedes-Benz's strategy includes advancements in its hybrid tech, which is poised to bridge traditional ICE vehicles and full EVs. By improving the efficiency and performance of PHEVs, Mercedes aims to provide consumers with practical, eco-friendly options during the transition period.
The company's investment in digitalization is another key component of this strategy. Enhancing software capabilities and vehicle connectivity can improve overall efficiency and customer experience, making ICE and hybrid vehicles more attractive in the short to medium term. KR
