Previewed by SAIC Motor Malaysia today were the new MG HS mid-sized crossover SUV (left) and sleek MG5 four-door fastback saloon (right).
After re-entering the Malaysian market earlier this year initially with two all-electric offerings, the SAIC-owned MG brand sees its line-up expanded further. Previewed by SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SAIC Motor Malaysia) earlier today were the new MG HS and MG5 models.
These latest additions see the MG brand re-enter both the burgeoning local mid-sized crossover SUV and B-segment saloon spaces. Starting with the former, the MG HS crossover SUV launched earlier today comes in the form of the face-lifted first-generation model introduced back in 2020.
The MG HS will see two variants available - Standard and Lux.
Four paintjob options will be available, and both variants are set apart by differing levels of kit primed aboard.
For Malaysia, SAIC Motor Malaysia is set to offer the MG HS in two variants – Standard and Lux. Both variant names are pretty self-explanatory, but both share the same 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol heart outputting 162 PS and 250 NM to the front wheels via a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch (DCT) box.
Sitting 4,574 MM long with a 2,720 MM wheelbase, 1,876 MM wide and 1,664 MM tall, the MG HS shares a similar footprint as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Proton X70. This Sino-British marque’s rival against which also boasts a respectably large 463-litre boot, which is expandable up to 1,287 litres.
Key features in the Standard guise include full-LED lights front and aft, stylish 17-inch alloy wheels, 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, automatic single-zone climate control with rear vents, as well as power adjustable front seats, amongst many.
The Lux variant gets bolstered with larger 18-inch wheels, red-painted brake calipers, panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, front ‘Sports Seats’, large 12.3-inch digital instrument panel (analogue dials plus 7-inch MID in the Standard), MG iSMART connectivity, 360-degree camera, ‘Super Sport Mode’, paddle-shifters, and a six-speaker audio setup (versus four speakers in the standard)
Both the MG ISMART connectivity and MG Pilot ADAS suites are key exclusive features reserved for the higher-end MG HS Lux variant.
Also exclusive to the higher-end Lux variant is a higher-end dual-zone automatic climate control suite, novel 64-colour cabin ambient lighting, and the MG Pilot full Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package. The latter adds Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Departure Warning & Prevention, Blind Spot Detection, as well as Lane Change Assist, amongst many.
As for basic safety, the bill includes six airbags, ABS brakes, hill-start assist plus hill-descent control, stability control and active rollover protection.
Tentatively, SAIC Motor Malaysia have set estimated ceiling prices of RM130,000 (Standard) and RM150,000 (Lux) for the MG HS, which is now open for pre-booking at selected MG dealers.
Set to be available across four colourways, the MG HS SUV offering is now open for pre-booking at selected MG dealerships. The firm has set estimated ceiling prices of RM130,000 and RM150,000 for the Standard and Lux variants respectively.
Said prices are set to include a 5-year unlimited mileage base vehicle warranty plus a separate 7-year unlimited mileage powertrain warranty as well.
Also previewed today was the sleek MG5 four-door fastback saloon.
Moving to the MG5, SAIC Motor Malaysia is poised to bait prospecting B-segment saloon buyers who seek a sleeker and sportier-styled alternative that’s also still richly-laden with both luxury and tech. Adding to its styling too are its 17-inch ‘Tomahawk’ alloy wheels and all-LED head- and taillights.
At 4,675 MM long with a 2,680 MM wheelbase, 1,842 MM wide and 1,480 MM tall, the MG5’s footprint now sees it stand as the longest and widest B-segment sedan available locally according to SAIC Motor Malaysia.
The MG5 is touted by SAIC Motor Malaysia as the longest and widest B-segment sedan on sale in Malaysia.
The sleek four-door fastback's design is also complemented by snazzy LED lights and 17-inch wheels.
Under the hood, the sleek four-door coupe offering is powered by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated 4-cyl petrol heart that develops 114 PS and 150 NM. Drive goes to the front wheels via MG’s unique 8-speed ‘iCVT’ automatic box.
On board, this sleek four-door fastback boast a power-adjustable driver seat, 7-inch digital instrument display, 10.25-inch floating infotainment touchscreen offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six-speaker audio suite, automatic single-zone climate control with rear vents, black leather upholstery with red accent and pipe-stitching, as well as a sunroof.
As for safety, the basics includes six airbags lining the cabin, followed the inclusion of the MG Pilot ADAS suite yet again, albeit sans adaptive cruise control.
Like the HS, this sleek Sino-British alternative is open for pre-booking now at selected MG dealerships. As for price, SAIC Motor Malaysia has set an estimated ceiling price of RM100,000. Said price will include a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty plus a 7-year unlimited mileage powertrain warranty as well.
Keen to view and perhaps place early bookings for either? You can do so at selected MG dealerships listed in the schedule below:
