BYD Shark 6 Shown In Malaysia, H2 2026 Launch Planned
Yes, folks. The BYD Shark 6 electrified pick-up truck has arrived for an early preview at the BYD Tech Discovery 2025 showcase happening this week at Desa Park City.

Earlier today, the Carz.com.my team was able to size-up the BYD Shark 6 in Desa Park City, Kuala Lumpur. The electrified pick-up truck offering, which recently saw sales cancelled in Thailand due to poor demand, looks set to enter Malaysia instead.
Headlining the BYD Tech Discovery 2025 roadshow organised by BYD Cars Malaysia this week, said Malaysian arm of the Chinese global NEV-making giants have confirmed plans to introduce the Shark 6 in Malaysia sometime in the second half (H2) of next year (2026). Announced for next year too was Z9 GT sports estate under its Denza sub-brand.
Principals BYD Cars Malaysia revealed plans to introduce the Shark 6, as well as the Denza Z9 GT, in the second half (H2) of next year (2026).

Given that said timeline aligns with the firm’s commitment towards establishing a local assembly (CKD) plant in Tanjong Malim, Perak, we’ll leave it to you to speculate if the Shark 6 will be localised there or not – pick-up trucks are exempted from excise duties in Malaysia, regardless of status as a fully imported (CBU) or locally assembled (CKD) unit.
What’s certain is that the truck has arrived for keen and avid local prospects to size-up – and perhaps try it first-hand – at the brand’s roadshow mentioned. We’ll recount our experience of which later on. For now, here’s everything you ought to know about the BYD Shark 6.
In terms of footprint, the BYD Shark 6 is slightly larger than the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, albeit with a slightly shorter wheelbase.

It’s A Large & ‘Beefy’ Truck
As recounted prior, the BYD Shark 6 – which debuted globally as the BYD Shark in May 2024 – has a similar footprint as the Ford Ranger Wildtrak. It sits 5,457 MM long with a 3,260 MM wheelbase, 1,971 MM wide and 1,925 MM tall.
In fact, this electrified Chinese fighter is 87 MM longer and 53 MM wider than the range-topping Ford pick-up truck mentioned. It however lives with a slightly shorter (10 MM) wheelbase from said offering from Ford again.

BYD also touts the Shark 6 in boasting a 1,460-litre flatbed capacity - it's larger than the Ford Ranger's 1,233-litre figure.

Moreover, BYD claims up to 54% of the Shark 6’s body is constructed using high-strength steel. The firm adds that the 30 kWh ‘Blade’ LFP battery pack brimmed in the double-cab’s floor serves as a structural component, contributing up to 38% of the truck’s structural rigidity.
The right-hand-drive (RHD) units we sized up today certainly looks as large as you’d expect, complete with sizeable 18-inch rolling stock brimmed. We’ll also add that it boasts a 1,450-litre flatbed capacity, which is larger than the rivalling Ford Ranger’s 1,233-litre figure.
Whilst here, we’ll even highlight BYD’s claimed 835 KG and 2,500 KG payload and towing capacities respectively. In other words, this doesn’t just look like a pick-up truck, it has the tough and robust build to be one.

Underneath, the BYD Shark 6 employs the 'DM-O Super Hybrid' powertrain, which merges a 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol mill with a pair of e-motors plus a 30 kWh Blade LFP battery pack.

‘DM-O Super Hybrid’ Powertrain
One of the key reasons for BYD Cars Malaysia to showcase the Shark 6 locally stems from the unique electrified powertrain it adopts, which it christened as the ‘Dual-Mode Off-Road (DM-O) Super Hybrid System'.
The package combines a 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol mill rated at 184 PS and 260 Nm with a pair of e-motors (one for each axle) and the 30 kWh Blade LFP battery pack mentioned. Combined, the setup puts down 436 PS and a whopping 650 Nm of twist to all four wheels.
With 650 Nm of peak torque available on tap, as well as all-wheel-drive (AWD) with selectable drive and terrain modes, the BYD Shark 6 has all the chops of being a proper off-road-ready pick-up truck.

For reference, said outputs eclipses the range-topping Ford Ranger Wildtrak 3.0 V6 turbo-diesel, which offers just 250 PS and 600 Nm. In turn, the BYD Shark 6 delivers rapid performance, with 0-100 KM/H sprints despatched in just 5.7 secs – it’s quicker than a Honda Civic Type R!
Besides that, the battery pack noted prior accepts 7 kW AC or up to 55 kW of DC fast-charging inputs, the latter delivering 30-80% re-charge cycles in just 25 minutes. Naturally, the petrol mill primarily serves to recharge said pack, and there’s even 3.3 kW V2L function present.
Moreover, the combination of an ultra-low fuel economy average of 2.0 litres/100 KM and combined petrol-electric range of up to 840 KM, the BYD Shark 6 promises to be a very cost-efficient pick-up truck to own and run.

As for range, up to 100 KM of electric-only range is touted, whilst combined petrol-electric range stands at 840 KM. Moreover, BYD also touts an ultra-low average fuel economy figure of 2.0 litres/100 KM.
Given the latter figures, plus the fact that we are in in the age of rationalised diesel and petrol subsidies, the Shark 6 should stand as a tempting proposition for avid and keen prospecting buyers seeking a to adopt a cost-effective pick-up truck.

As far as pick-up trucks go, the BYD Shark 6 is as fully-loaded as they come, complete with ADAS features that grants semi-autonomous driving abilities.

It’s Fully-Loaded
In typical fashion of any ‘premium’ and electrified Chinese product on sale locally today, the BYD Shark 6 is brimmed to the core with plenty of tech and amenities to boot. Highlights on board include a 15.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, as well as an automatic dual-zone climate control with rear vents, amongst others.
Typically Chinese too is the fact that the BYD Shark 6 is primed with a slew of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that enables a high-degree of semi-autonomous driving abilities. Included here are adaptive cruise control (ACC), autonomous emergency braking (AEB0, lane-keeping assist (LKA), blind spot monitor (BSM), as well as a 360-degree camera suite.
Would You Fancy One?
Given what we’ve laid out, what do you folks think then? Would you be keen to adopt the BYD Shark 6 yourselves? As usual, share your thoughts in the comments below, as well as through our social media pages…
