BYD has given the Seagull EV hatch a 2025 model year update in China, featuring minor equipment upgrades.

Chinese automotive giant BYD has given the Seagull EV hatch a 2025 model year (2025 MY) update in China today. For the 2025 MY update, this small EV hatch features some minor styling and equipment upgrades while boasting the same powertrain setup as prior.

Starting with the visuals, the 2025 MY Seagull looks more or less identical to the previous version, with the only notable differences being the absence of the ‘Build Your Dreams’ lettering at the tailgate, which has been replaced with the BYD logo instead. Also new here are the 16-inch wheel options offered to the top-two variants of the Seagull, with the baseline Vitality Edition rolling on 15-inch units instead.

For the 2025 MY version, the Seagull EV is offered in four exterior colors—Arctic Blue, Warm Sun White, Polar Night Black, and Peach Pink—as well as two interior colours, Deep Ocean Blue and Dune Pink.

Speaking of interior, nothing much has changed inside the new Seagull, with the 2025 MY model still rocking the same front dash setup as before, featuring a 7-inch floating instrument cluster and a larger 10.1-inch rotatable central infotainment display. Choosing the top-two Freedom Edition and Flying Edition variants will grant owners a wireless phone charger, heated function for the front seats, as well as six-way adjustment for the driver’s seat.

Given that this is just a mere model year update, no changes take place to the Seagull’s powertrain setup, as this small EV hatch still underpins the same BYDe-Platform 3.0 as before, while being powered by a single e-motor setup rated at 74 HP (55 kW) and 135 NM. As for the battery, the two baseline variants get a smaller 30.08-kWh BYD ‘Blade’ battery pack that provides a maximum CLTC range of 305 KM, while the range-topping Seagull Flying Edition uses a bigger 38.88-kWh battery pack for a longer CLTC range of 405 KM/H.

Now available for purchase in its native Chinese market, the 2025 MY BYD Seagull EV hatch starts at CNY 69,800 (RM44,061) for the baseline Vitality Edition, CNY 75,800 (RM47,848) for the middling Freedom Edition, and CNY 85,800 (RM54,161) for the range-topping Flying Edition.

Given how popular this small EV hatch is in China, it comes as no surprise that BYD has elected to give it a model year update for 2025. In the first half of 2024 alone, the Chinese automaker managed to sell over 191,037 units of the Seagull EV, making it one of the best-selling battery EV models by the marque so far this year.

Unfortunately, local BYD brand custodian Sime Darby Motors has yet to express any interest in introducing the Seagull EV into our market, citing that the minimum RM100,000 price cap for foreign-badged EVs imposed by the government makes it impossible for them to sell the mall EV hatch here at appropriate prices.

With that being said, there’s still a chance that we may get to see this small EV hatch roaming our backyards once the tax-free incentive expires at the end of 2025. But then again, the local market should be saturated with tons of EV models by that time, possibly including some local-branded ones, too.
