MINI Cooper JCW E Hot-Hatch Images Leaked Ahead of Debut

It is no secret that MINI is working on a performance version of its new MINI Cooper EV hatchback, with several teaser images of the new model unveiled by the automaker earlier this year. Set to be called the MINI Cooper JCW E, it appears that we don’t need to wait long to get a glimpse of this new EV hot hatch, as several images of the car were unveiled by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

From the images, we can clearly see that the sporty Cooper EV gets a proper John Cooper Works treatment that sets it apart from the JCW trim model revealed late last year. Key design highlights include the fully enclosed front grille that is decked with a JCW logo and the chequered flag motifs, plus a pretty prominent central air intake flanked by a pair of vertical air curtains, which we assume will help to enhance the cooling performance of this EV hot-hatch.
The JCW treatment continues as we get to the side part of the Cooper JCW E, with key design features present here include the 18-inch JCW wheels with partially-enclosed spoke design for optimum aerodynamics, as well as the aggressive side skirts.

The rear part, however, looks somewhat similar to the JCW trim model, although the extra JCW badges may give us some clues in differentiating the two models. Besides the logos, we also notice that the JCW E gets a unique chequered flag-patterned trim on its tailgate, whereas the roof gets optional gradient paint job options instead of the classic chequered-flag decals we saw on previous Cooper JCW models.

Besides the leaked images, China’s MIIT also unveils several performance specifications for the upcoming MINI Cooper JCW E, with said EV hot-hatch set to be juiced by a lithium-ion battery that powers its single e-motor setup that makes 255 HP (190 kW)—making it 40 HP (30 kW) more potent than the current top-spec Cooper SE model. This power boost allows the 1,670 KG-weight Cooper JCW E to have a decent top speed of 200 KM/H, although no century sprint times were given by neither the automaker nor the ministry.
While its pre-production prototype already made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year, the production-ready MINI Cooper JCW E is slated to debut globally some time later in Fall this year. We can expect to learn more things about this JCW-badged EV hot-hatch as we get closer to its launch date.
