The updated 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been officially unveiled this week.

It’s been years since the Mitsubishi Outlander was offered in Malaysia. Since its demise from our local market, this compact SUV has not only gotten a next-gen model with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant but also a new 2025 model year (2025 MY) version that features better all-electric performance, some minor design tweaks, and more.

Thanks to its bigger battery pack, the new 2025 Outlander PHEV now boasts a higher EV-only range of 86 KM (WLTP).

Starting with the most significant change, the updated fourth-gen Outlander PHEV now gets a bigger 22.7-kWh PHEV battery pack, replacing the old 20-kWh unit used on the pre-updated model. According to Mitsubishi Motors, this new unit grants the Outlander PHEV up to 86 KM of all-electric range (WLTP), while its combined maximum travel range reads at 844 KM, thanks to its larger 53 litres fuel tank.

This new battery pack continues to be mated with the same 2.4-litre 4-cyl naturally-aspirated MIVEC engine rated at 134 HP and 203 NM that works in tandem with the dual electric motor that completes its Super All Wheel Control AWD system to deliver a total system output of 302 HP. This figure allows the new Outlander PHEV to go from 0-100 KM/H in 7.9 seconds and a pretty low fuel consumption of only 0.8 litre per 100 KM.

And just like other PHEV SUVs out there, the new Outlander PHEV will be available in three drive modes, including a pure electric drive, series hybrid, and parallel hybrid. On top of that, thanks to the aforementioned AWD system, the Outlander PHEV also gets several off-road driving modes such as Snow, Mud, and Gravel.

On the visual front, the updated Outlander PHEV features some very mild design tweaks, with the most notable changes being both the new front grille design that now incorporates an active shutter intake as well as the 20-inch alloy wheels it rides on. Not to forget, the car’s LED taillights also feature a revised lighting signature, while a new Moonstone Grey paint job is now available.

Equally mild are the on-board upgrades for the 2025 Outlander PHEV, which entail a larger 12.3-inch central infotainment display that continues to offer wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while a new 12-speaker Yamaha audio system replaces the old Bose unit on the top-flight variants.

No news for now on the availability of the updated 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV beyond both the Japanese and European markets.

The updated 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is slated to make its debut in selected international markets, including its native Japan, followed by the European market in March 2025. As of now, Mitsubishi has yet to unveil neither the pricing details for the new Outlander PHEV nor its availability beyond the two aforementioned markets.

So folks, what do you think of the new 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? Could this latest version spark Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) to reintroduce this compact SUV back into our market before the arrival of other Sino-made PHEV SUVs? As always, don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below…
