Penang Bridge Begins To Accept Credit, Debit Cards For Toll Payments

The open payment system (OPS) at the toll plaza of the Penang Bridge has been activated, as announced by PLUS. This enables users to use their Visa or Mastercard-branded debit and credit cards, as well as MyDebit cards, to make toll payments online.
For the record, the Penang Bridge toll plaza had been considering accepting debit and credit card payments for some time before PLUS attempted to implement it with the PLUS RFID in 2018. However, the concessionaire was sued by Touch 'n Go's parent company, CIMB. Both companies reached an agreement in late 2019, with TNG RFID emerging as the de facto RFID technology for PLUS highways.
Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi identified Penang Bridge as one of the five routes that would support OPS. Then, the implementation was rescheduled for the end of 2023. Lastly, PLUS announced last Friday, March 15, that it will be accepting credit and debit card payments at Penang Bridge for a trial period.
In addition to Touch 'n Go cards and RFID, users can now pay for toll transactions with debit or credit cards. According to the concessionaire, lanes bearing the logos of Visa, Mastercard, and MyDebit can be used for toll transactions.
A 20% discount on the Penang Bridge toll rate under PLUSMiles will also be available to eligible Penangites who pay with bank cards or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Those who drive company cars are also qualified, but they can only receive the discount by using Touch 'n Go cards.
Please be aware that in order to benefit from the discounted rate, users must register their vehicle and preferred method of payment in advance through the Jimat Di Penang portal.
