Xiaomi's Electric Car Sales Are Booming , CEO Says
Xiaomi's debut into the electric vehicle (EV) market has been a huge success. The CEO of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Lei Jun, revealed during a livestream on Douyin that sales of the company's first electric car, the SU7, have exceeded initial projections by three to five times.
The SU7's attractive price tag has certainly contributed to its popularity. At under $30,000 for the base model, it is $4,000 less expensive than the base model of Tesla's Model 3 in China. This affordability has clearly resonated with consumers, as sales have exceeded initial projections.
Although Xiaomi anticipates losses with the SU7, its substantial financial resources enable it to overcome these obstacles. Deliveries of the standard version of the SU7 are currently underway in Beijing and Shenzhen, having started with a limited batch of 5,000 Founder's Edition cars, which are outfitted with extra accessories for early adopters.
Lei Jun also talked about future development plans for Xiaomi's electric car venture, stating that the company will not be producing off-road vehicles and will instead be concentrating on the SU7. Nevertheless, he stressed the significance of software updates, demanding frequent iterations to improve any issues promptly.
Xiaomi intends to release Max models this month and Pro models by the end of May in addition to the standard model. It is anticipated that these versions will increase Xiaomi's market share in the EV industry.
Lei Jun did not respond to rumors that Xiaomi was planning to release a sports utility vehicle (SUV) during the livestream. Wei Jianjun, CEO of Great Wall Motor, a Chinese automaker, was with him despite this, and he commended Xiaomi for creating a vehicle of this caliber in just three years.
Xiaomi's foray into the electric vehicle market has surpassed projections. Xiaomi has gained traction with Chinese customers thanks to its low price and emphasis on useful features. The company's impact on the market is anticipated to increase as it delivers more electric vehicles and broadens its range.
