Geely Galaxy E5, Proton e.MAS 7’s Chinese Twin Launched - From RM71K
Just a day after Proton previewed the heavily camouflaged e.MAS 7 in Malaysia, Geely launched its twin the Galaxy E5 in China.
However, before delving too deeply into the Galaxy E5, it’s important to note that, according to Proton, the e.MAS 7 is not a rebadged E5. Both the left- and right-hand drive models were developed concurrently from the ground up.
As reported back in July when Geely opened the Galaxy E5 for booking, five variants will be offered. However, to everyone's surprise, the launch prices are even lower than the pre-order prices. The new prices are listed below with their corresponding CLTC range:
- 530KM Starship: RMB148,800 (RM93,000)
- 530KM Discovery+: RMB138,800 (RM87,000)
- 530KM Voyage: RMB128,800 (RM81,000)
- 440KM Exploration: RMB122,800 (RM77,000)
- 440KM Sailing: RMB112,800 (RM71,000)
Additionally, for early birds who place bookings before Oct 1st, Geely is offering an additional RMB3,000 (RM1,800) discount. To put the prices into perspective, the BYD Atto 3, which the E5 competes against, is priced between RMB119,800 (RM75,000) and RMB147,800 (RM93,000), with 430 KM and 510 KM CLTC range options.
However, bases on how car prices are marked up in Malaysia, do expect a RM20,000 to RM30,000 premium for the upcoming Proton e.MAS 7. Any lower price would be a bonus.
As for dimensions, the E5 is 4,615 MM long with a 2,750 MM wheelbase, 1,901 MM wide, and 1,670 MM tall. This makes it 160 MM longer, 26 MM wider, 55 MM taller, and with a 30 MM extra wheelbase compared to the Atto 3.
All variants of the Galaxy E5 are powered by a single-motor setup with a 160 kW output. The SUV is offered with Geely’s latest Aegis Short Blade battery specifications: 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh, corresponding to claimed CLTC pure electric ranges of 440 KM and 530 KM, respectively.
According to Geely, the Aegis Short Blade Battery features an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and offers a lifespan of up to 3,500 cycles. This longevity translates to approximately 1 million KM of driving with minimal impact on range.
The Galaxy E5 is equipped with the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive system that produces 160 kW (215 HP) of peak power and 320 NM of peak torque, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 KM/H in 6.9 seconds. It boasts an overall efficiency of 90.04% and a minimum power consumption of 11.9 kWh per 100 KM.
Additionally, the Galaxy E5 underpins the Geely Electric Architecture (GEA) platform, derived from Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which supports full electrification with options such as pure electric, hybrid, range extender, and green methanol.
Inside, the Galaxy E5 offers a stylish and comfortable environment with a dark-on-top-light-on-bottom colour scheme. Other key interior features include a 15.4-inch floating 2.5K HD infotainment screen, a 10.2-inch LCD instrument panel, and a head-up display (HUD). The infotainment screen is integrated with the 16-speaker Flyme Auto system and is powered by the 7nm Dragon Eagle No.1 processor.
Having reviewed these specifications for the Galaxy E5, we can paint a rough picture of what to expect when the e.MAS 7 launches in Dec 2024. With Proton claiming its very first EV is not a rebadged Geely, it will be interesting to see how differently the Proton version will turn out, especially with regards to the choice of exterior and interior colour options that will be offered.
