Audi Q6 e-tron Off-Road Unveiled as a Rugged EV Concept with Portal Axles

Audi showcases the off-roading prowess of its EV by unveiling the radical Q6 e-tron Off-Road concept.
"Quattro redefined." That’s what Audi used to describe its latest EV concept model, known as the Audi Q6 e-tron Off-Road. And as its name suggests, this rugged EV SUV gets a pretty heavy makeover over its standard counterpart, featuring tons of serious off-roading parts and equipment.

Let’s start with the biggest things first. According to Audi, the Q6 e-tron Off-Road has been fitted with portal axles, which boost the SUV’s ground clearance significantly by moving the axle housings above the wheel hubs. These concoctions are usually reserved for extreme off-roaders like the Mercedes-AMG G63 4x4² and the Unimog, and this concept is also the first-ever Audi model to come with it.
To go with its jacked-up look, the Q6 e-tron Off-Road also gains a slew of rugged off-roading parts, including the new set of spotlights to complement the slim LED headlights, a built-in roof rack, flared-out wheel arches to make way for its studded ice tyres, as well as some serious underbody claddings.

As of now, Audi has yet to unveil any details regarding this concept’s powertrain and battery setups, although we already knew that it will be fully electric. Given that the concept seems to be based on the new Q6 Sportback e-tron, perhaps we can expect the Q6 e-tron Off-Road to get a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that can deliver up to 510 HP in the SQ6 Sportback e-tron, allowing the coupe SUV to go from 0-100 KM/H in just 4.3 seconds.

What also remains a mystery for now is the eventual fate of the Q6 e-tron Off-Road concept, but we can expect to learn more about this rugged off-roader EV in due course. With that being said, Carscoops did speculate that Audi might have some ambitious motorsport plans for this rugged concept, as the Dakar rally championship recently opened a new stock category that only allows entries from production models, not bespoke creations. Land Rover has already confirmed its entry into this new category for the 2026 edition with a new rally car based on the Defender Octa, and we can expect more automakers to follow suit in the near future.

Speaking of Land Rover, Autocar UK reports that now Audi’s design department is headed by former Land Rover designer Massimo Frascella, perhaps this new Q6 e-tron Off-Road concept will serve as a basis for future off-road-capable EVs by the German automaker, possibly marking the return of the ‘Allroad’ nameplate, which was previously reserved for rugged versions of the old A4 and A6 wagons.
