E41: Tesla Model Y To Counter China’s EV Giants
Despite the 2025 Tesla Model Y "Juniper" securing 200,000 orders before deliveries began in late February, initial sales figures are still lukewarm as only 6,000 units were delivered in the first week, indicating that production ramp-up may not be the sole issue to consider.
Tesla's struggles in China are becoming increasingly evident. In Feb 2025, the company’s total sales dropped by 49% year-over-year to 30,688 units, marking its worst performance since July 2022.
The Model Y saw an even sharper decline, with sales plunging 77% to just 8,006 units.
This however is not limited to China, as Tesla also faces declining sales in Europe and North America - leading to a 15% drop in its recent stock price.
To mitigate these challenges, Tesla’s China team is spearheading the development of a lower-cost Model Y variant, codenamed E41.
This budget-friendly model will retain the core components of the existing Model Y, including its battery, powertrain, and chassis, but will follow Tesla’s "depop" strategy - a focus on simplifying configurations while maintaining essential functionalities.
Tesla has used this strategy before in Mexico, where it introduced a de-featured, lower-priced Model 3. However, unlike that initiative, the E41 project is primarily driven by the company’s China team - highlights how important the Chinese market is to Tesla even down to the use of an alphanumeric code name which is popular amongst other Chinese brands.
The success of the E41 Model Y depends on the performance of the refreshed Model Y. If sales remain weak, Tesla could launch the lower-cost version priced 20% lower in the latter half of this year with production in Gigafactory Shanghai, U.S. and Germany.
Tesla's declining product competitiveness in China is largely due to rapid advancements by local EV manufacturers - Xiaomi's SU7 has outsold the Model 3 for three consecutive months.
Despite these challenges, Tesla still holds considerable brand appeal in China, a market where consumers prioritise range, features, and smart technology. However, long-term success based on this strategy remains to be seen.
