VW May Avoid Trump's 25% Tariffs, Gaining Advantage Over BMW

NON-NATIONAL,-CHINESE-CARMAKERS-COMPETITION---2025-03-10T121504.088.png Global automakers are being forced to re-evaluate their production strategies and supply chains due to increased trade tensions and the Trump administration's 25% tariff on all auto imports from Canada and Mexico. Volkswagen seems to have found a strategic solution, while many other automakers are struggling with the potential financial losses and logistical problems caused by these tariffs.

Recent announcements from the German automaker suggest that its North American-manufactured vehicles may be exempt from these hefty import duties. This strategic advantage could potentially give Volkswagen a significant edge over its competitors in the North American market, including BMW and other automakers who may not be afforded the same tariff exemption.

This week, Trump granted automakers a one-month reprieve on tariffs for production units or any other relation that fell outside the scope of the United States-Mexico-Canada accord rules of origin. The tariffs were set to go into effect on March 4, but it is unclear which automakers will be subject to them.

According to a Volkswagen representative, the company's North American vehicles do not adhere to the terms imposed by the USMCA. Additionally, a BMW representative addressed the issue, stating that cars imported from Mexico and the United States are subject to high tariffs since they do not adhere to the laws of the trade. The representative added that roughly 10% of BMW's US sales come from imports from Mexico.

German automakers are expected to be most affected by the new tariffs. Volkswagen, in particular, may have to pay high tariffs on some of its brands, such as Audi and Porsche, which do not have production facilities in the United States. While the majority of VW passenger car brand sales in the US come from imports from the Mexico factory, the new tariffs will also affect the brand's battery cell plant, which was being built in Canada to supply batteries for EVs. Audi also operates a plant in Mexico, which manufactures the Audi Q5 SUV for US markets. 2021-audi-q5-mmp-1-1616682622.jpg
