Porsche Shifts Course, Promises More Hybrid Models Over EVs

Porsche is the latest amongst a string of automakers back-tracking and revising its full-electrification plans.

Renowned German sportscar marque Porsche is now the latest to backtrack and revise its previous commitment towards full electrification. As a result, the Stuttgart-rooted firm recently announced plans to churn out more hybrid models instead of electric vehicles (EVs).

During an annual shareholder meeting held this week, CEO Oliver Blume said full electrification won’t happen at Porsche, and the exec adds this wasn’t from the firm’s lack of trying – efforts in creating both the Taycan and new second-gen Macan electric are proof of which.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume speaking during the brand's annual shareholder meeting held earlier this week where he detailed Porsche's renewed emphasis on hybrid models instead of EVs.

Blume emphasised on hybrid options instead, but at the same time, the exec also confirmed that Porsche will continue to expand in EV line-up too.  "Our goal was to deliver more than 80% fully electric sports cars by 2030. One of the most ambitious goals in the entire industry," Said Blume in prepared remarks.

"Our product strategy would still allow us to achieve this. In view of market developments, it is not realistic. Our BEV ramp-up will therefore adapt flexibly. To demand and market developments," adds the exec. “After a strong start-up phase, it has now become clear that we were a step ahead of market developments,"  explained Blume further.

"The comprehensive and above all sustainable ramp-up has not yet materialised. The transition phase will probably be much longer than originally thought,” he continued before acknowledging the new “balanced approach” towards products the brand has now adopted because of these shifting market forces.

Through the latter, Porsche will continue to churn out combustion engines (ICE), hybrids and all-electric (EV) sportscars. Regarding hybrids, Porsche currently has both its ‘T-Hybrid’ performance hybrid and ‘E-Hybrid’ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technologies available.

Presently, Porsche has two active hybrid powertrain tech on offer - its new 'T-Hybrid' performance hybrid setup, as well as its 'e-Hybrid' plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup.

Blume then continued by saying that the firm is also examining the creation of a “new model series”, and that it could arrive to market towards the end of the decade with both “combustion and hybrid drive” options underneath.

This also follows previous confirmation of combustion and EV versions of the Panamera and Cayenne will live alongside one another into the 2030s. Surprisingly, the company also appears full steam ahead with developing its electric 718 sportscars too.

Lastly, Blume also confirmed that Porsche will scrap plans to expand production capacities fore high-performance battery cells – an effort the firm was jointly pursuing with partners Cellforce Group.

“We will no longer be pursuing these plans independently. This is because the expected sales volumes have been significantly reduced,” notes Blume, who is also reportedly under pressure internally to drop his dual Porsche-VW leadership role.

Much of the latter sentiments arguably stems from Porsche’s collapsed China market sales performance, and the discounts of Porsche’s share prices caused by Blume’s dual role mentioned.

Despite so, Blume’s position isn’t expected to change anytime soon.
