Prasarana Aims For 40% Public Transit Ridership By 2030
Prasarana Malaysia Bhd aims to boost public transport usage to 40% by 2030 through ongoing service and facility improvements.
President and Group CEO Azharuddin Mat Sah reported strategic planning with government support to raise ridership from the current 1.3 million to 1.5 million next year.
Key initiatives include the implementation of dedicated bus lanes, the expected completion of the LRT 3 (Shah Alam route) by the end of this year, and collaborations with the housing and local government ministry to improve pedestrian access to bus and LRT stations.
As part of its sustainable mobility agenda, Prasarana also intends to increase the number of electric buses and the Rapid KL On-Demand service, according to Azharuddin.
“Dedicated bus lanes are also very important because they allow buses to increase their frequency and provide faster journeys for passengers,” he said, adding that the systematic and comprehensive approach could contribute towards achieving the 40% target.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently expressed concern over the country's low public transport usage at 25%, contrasting it with over 60% in cities like Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore.
He cited the high number of registered cars (38.7 million by the end of 2024) as evidence of over-reliance on private vehicles, negatively impacting quality of life and infrastructure.
