Xiaomi Set To Unveil Tesla-challenging YU7 Today

Chinese tech powerhouse Xiaomi is set to unveil its highly anticipated YU7 EV SUV in Beijing today, May 22, at 7PM Beijing time. The launch event, titled "a new beginning for Xiaomi's 15th anniversary," marks a significant milestone for the company.
Within a mere four years of entering the EV sector, Xiaomi has quickly established itself as a significant player. Their debut EV, the SU7, launched in March 2024, has achieved considerable success, exceeding initial projections with 200,000 units delivered in 119 days and over 28,000 deliveries in April alone.
The firm’s upcoming YU7 crossover, confirmed in December and rumored as a Tesla Model Y competitor since the SU7's debut, is poised to be a crucial product launch. While not just a larger SU7, the YU7 is expected to share significant technological features with the sedan and directly challenge the globally best-selling Tesla Model Y.
However, Xiaomi hasn't revealed many details about the EV other than a few pictures. Some of the SUV's key characteristics were made public via a Chinese regulatory file after the December 2024 name announcement.
According to the document, the Xiaomi YU7 has a wheelbase of 3,000 mm and dimensions of 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height. The SUV has a top speed of 253 km/h and weighs 2,405 kg.
The front and rear motors of the single model in the filing had a maximum output of 220 kW and 288 kW, respectively. Those motors will be powered by a lithium-ion ternary battery from CATL, albeit at the time, its capacity was unknown.
Recent public criticism in China regarding a fatal SU7 crash in late March might be mitigated by the introduction of this new EV, potentially shifting public attention positively.
Despite a minor dip in SU7 sales, the company still maintains over 20,000 monthly BEV deliveries. The upcoming launch and deliveries of the YU7 are expected to further increase these figures.
