This is McLaren’s New Le Mans Hypercar for 2027

McLaren has unveiled its new Le Mans hypercar for the 2027 season of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
It appears that the Toyota GR LH2 Racing Concept wasn’t the only racing prototype unveiled at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race, as McLaren has just unveiled its new Le Mans hypercar. This unnamed prototype will make its racing debut at the 2027 season of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), where the British marque will partner with United Autosport to race under the new McLaren United AS banner.

Unlike other bespoke cars under the top-flight Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) category, McLaren’s new hypercar will follow the LMDh regulation. This means that it will mostly feature off-the-shelf parts instead of being developed from the ground up, and more importantly, they won’t be needing to fork out extra money like their LMH rivals.
One of the off-the-shelf parts includes the entire carbon fibre monocoque chassis of the car, which must come from one of the four spec suppliers listed under the LMDh regulations, namely Oreca, Multimac, Ligier, and Dallara. It appears McLaren has chosen Dallara, which is also the same chassis supplier for their IndyCar racer.

Powertrain-wise, the unnamed hypercar will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine, whose capacity has yet to be revealed. And no, it won’t be the same V6 used on the Artura, as McLaren actually planned to develop an entirely new V6 engine for this car, but we’ll know its total system output will be limited to 671 hp (500 kW), as per LMDh’s regulations.

Given its LMDh nature, it comes as no surprise that the McLaren hypercar looks very similar to other Dallara-based LMDhs like the Cadillac V-Series.R and the BMW M Hybrid V8. However, McLaren managed to implement some of the design languages from its road-going models, the most notable being the Senna-esque front face this hypercar boasts.

While this car won’t be seeing its first race until 2027, McLaren has decided to unveil it this year, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of its Le Mans debut. Putting their trust in the legendary McLaren F1 GTR, the automaker took home a 1-3-4-5 and -13 finish on its debut, thus etching McLaren’s name in the event’s history forever.
With McLaren poised to be back on the Le Mans grid later in 2027, the automaker now stands a chance to repeat its motorsport ‘Triple Crown’ feat, as the automaker also currently participates in the Monaco Grand Prix of the Formula One (F1) and IndyCar 500. To date, McLaren remains the only team to have managed that trio of victories, so the stakes for the Woking-based marque to repeat this feat are quite high, to say the least.
