McLaren Now Owned By Nio’s Abu Dhabi Backer

McLaren Automotive has a new owner: Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings that also happens to be the largest shareholder in Nio. While this is not fresh information, the agreement is now official. In addition to advancing CYVN's cutting-edge technology, the purchase should hasten McLaren's evolution. This follows the McLaren Formula 1 team's victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this past weekend, where driver Lando Norris won the first-place trophy.
The McLaren Group was just acquired by Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat, in April. In addition to a non-controlling interest in the McLaren Group, they have verified that a legally binding agreement has been signed with CYVN Holdings.
In October, it was first reported that Mumtalakat and CYVN Holdings were in negotiations to "drive McLaren’s growth trajectory and accelerate progress in the advanced mobility sector."
Jassem Mohammed Bu Ataba Al Zaabi, Chairman of CYVN Holdings, said, “This acquisition marks a defining moment in CYVN’s vision to build a leading, globally connected mobility platform and underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing role as a global center of excellence for innovation in advanced mobility." He went on to say that combining McLaren's heritage and CYVN’s advanced capabilities for both engineering and technology will help "redefine high-performance mobility."

With the help of international industry leaders, CYVN hopes to develop a state-of-the-art smart mobility platform by using funding, engineering expertise, creative technology, and capable leadership. This is consistent with Mumtalakat's approach to portfolio optimisation and long-term, steady financial gains.
We anticipate that in the next few years, several intriguing and cutting-edge new models will be available on the market as a result of this collaboration. In order to stay afloat during COVID, McLaren had to at one point scurry for money. Mumtalakat and other stockholders have played a key role in that. With any luck, CYVN can assist the luxury brand in getting back on track.
