VCM: S60 & S90 Sedans Sold Out, ES90 Coming But EM90 Won’t
Leading Swedish luxury marque Volvo sees raft of updates regarding its current products and plans for which in the local market.

Following various reports by our industry peers, Carz.com.my took the liberty to reach out directly to Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) earlier today. Thankfully, a spokesperson was on hand to clarify plenty of things, and here’s what we garnered…

S60 and S90 Sedans Sold Out, ES90 Coming Soon
Firstly, VCM confirmed that both the existing S60 and S90 sedan models are now sold out - existing stocks for have depleted. As a refresher, both were marketed in locally assembled (CKD) plug-in hybrid (PHEV) forms since their last update back in late 2023.
With the third-gen S60 nameplate discontinued globally, the larger S90 model did see a heavily face-lifted 2026 model year successor debut not too long ago. However, our source confirmed that VCM has no plans to offer this model locally yet.

Good news: VCM is planning to have the new and all-electric ES90 saloon launched instead, and this is poised for early 2026 according to our source.

Instead, VCM is putting together plans to introduce the new and all-electric ES90 model and position it as its sole saloon offering. Upon further enquiry, our source also hinted that the ES90 mentioned could arrive locally sometime in early 2026.
You can read up about both the new ES90 EV saloon and its heavily revised combustion (ICE)-powered S90 twin from our initial global launch reports of both by clicking here and here.

Another piece of bad news: the Volvo EM90 isn't coming to Malaysia. In fact, it appears this model is destined to be a China market only offering with no plans for export or right-hand-drive (RHD) versions.

EM90 Set For China Only, Export & RHD Not Planned
Regarding the brand’s much lauded EM90 luxury EV MPV model, our source confirmed that it will NOT find its way onto Malaysian shores. In fact, Carz.com.my has understood that the EM90 will be offered solely in China where it is also produced, for now.
In others words, parent firm Geely has no desire to have the Swedish marque’s ‘twin’ to the Zeekr 009 exported beyond the Chinese market. This also means that a right-hand-drive (RHD) version is NOT in the pipelines, despite its Zeekr twin mentioned having so.

For now, the Zeekr 009 stands in place of the Volvo EM90 locally.

Given how quickly this segment is getting saturated here in Malaysia lately, perhaps this is for the best too. Besides the Zeekr 009 mentioned, other alternatives available locally in this segment include the Denza D9 and Xpeng X9, with more on their way too.
Interestingly, with the rise of accessibly-priced luxury EV MPVs like the EM90 now present locally, VCM reckons it has the alternative to which, and not in the way you’d expect…
Instead of the EM90, VCM reckons the solution to thwart Chinese luxury EV MPVs lie in a posh, six-seat variant of its EX90 flagship EV SUV.

VCM Banks On 6-seater EX90 To Combat EV MPVs
In fact, our source confirmed that VCM seeks to thwart this Chinese-made luxury EV MPVs wave with its EX90 flagship EV SUV model. More specifically, the firm is exploring the possibility of adding the model’s posh and higher-end 6-seat variant locally for this.
In six-seat format, the EX90 is certainly a viable alternative as it delivers the same seating layout as most of these luxury EV MPVs do. However, one will need to make do with absent sliding doors, as well as a slightly smaller cabin with perhaps less headroom too.
For now, this isn’t firm yet, but our source alludes that internal discussions for which at VCM are heavy enough to see it stand as a possibility. As a refresher, the new and all-electric EX90 flagship EV SUV is offered solely in 7-seat form priced from RM442,888.

For now, VCM iterates that it will continue offering a "balanced product portfolio" dictated by local demands, meaning it will see the right mix of combustion (ICE)-powered - MHEV and PHEV included - and EV models.

Balance Between ICE (MHEV & PHEV) And EV Models
As for the bigger picture, our source iterated that VCM will continue pursuing a “balanced product portfolio”, which the firm adds is dictated by local demands.
In other words, the firm will continue offering the right mix of both ICE-powered models – both mild- (MHEV) and plug-in (PHEV) hybrids included –plus EVs.
Even with the discontinued S60 and S90 sedans – and the former’s long-roofed V60 twin – now dropped, VCM’s current line-up already has a good mix of both ICE (MHEV & PHEV) and EV models available on hand.
The former encompasses models the XC40, current-gen XC60, as well as the very-latest XC90 nameplates, whilst the latter sees things like the EX30, EC40 and EX90 present and accounted for.
