US-based Volvo S60 Production Ends This Month, Others Remain
Volvo is set to axe production of its S60 sedan at its American plant later this month. Production at other facilities appear intact, for now.
Despite experiencing soaring sales in the North American market recently, the Volvo S60 sedan’s production at the Swedish marque’s plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, will reportedly cease this month. This was confirmed by insiders quoted by multiple US titles.
"After five years Volvo Cars is ending production of the S60 sedan in Ridgeville, South Carolina at the end of June 2024 for the US and some other markets to focus on the all-new EX90," said a Volvo spokesperson to Motor1.com.
The S60, presently in its third-generation iteration, was the first sedan product at Volvo’s South Carolina plant mentioned when it debuted back in 2019. The model’s discontinuation stems from its reportedly slow sales pace compared to its peers – annual sales hovered between 10,000 and 12,000.
Sources also suggest that the S60’s discontinuation will allow more room to produce other more profitable models at said plant, namely the new all-electric EX90 flagship SUV. Apart from confirming its discontinuation, Volvo remains tight-lipped about the S60’s potential successor.
Locally, the S60 sedan received a major update back in Sept 2023 featuring a new and quicker 6.4 kW on board charger, plus a slew of mild styling tweaks and new amenities on board.
Whilst the end of the S60’s production in America might affect said model’s availability and sales in North America and other related markets, said saloon’s production elsewhere remains. Presently, Volvo builds the S60 in Sweden and China, and it also locally assembles (CKD) it here in Malaysia too.
For Malaysia, the S60 received a major update back in Sept 2023, along with other Volvo plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models (i.e. V60, S90, XC60, and XC90). A key change here was the adoption of a new and quicker 6.4 kW on-board charger, and a slew of other newly added amenities on board.
Locally, Volvo Car Malaysia presently retails the S60 solely in ‘Recharge’ PHEV guise that packs a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol mill augmented by a e-motor and 19 kWh battery. Altogether, the setup outputs 462 HP and 709 NM to allow 0-100 KM/H in 4.5 secs plus an electric-only range of 90 KM.
As for price, this BMW 330e and Mercedes-Benz C350e rival is tagged at RM315,888 sans insurance. Included in said figure is a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty plus a separate 8-year or 160,000 KM warranty for its PHEV battery.
