BYD Atto 2 Launches July 24, Test-Drives Opened From July 25

After weeks of cryptic teasing, BYD Cars Malaysia officially confirmed the arrival of the Atto 2. The latest reveal drops all ambiguity, with a full look at the new compact EV SUV now live on the brand’s social platforms.
The earlier campaign, which featured paw prints and the phrase “Don’t worry, Be Capy =)”, now makes complete sense. It introduces Carpy the Capybara, the Atto 2’s relaxed, community-loving mascot who embodies the vibe BYD is aiming for with this youthful new model.

The Atto 2 will sit between the Dolphin and Atto 3 in the local line-up, offering a more compact alternative for city drivers. Known as the Yuan Up in China, the model rides on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and Malaysia will be the first international market in this region to receive it.
The official launch is set to take place on July 24. Members of the public can get behind the wheel from July 25 to 27 during a three-day event at Heritage Valley, Kuala Lumpur. Test drives, lifestyle activities, giveaways and curated brand experiences will be held throughout the weekend centered around the pickleball and chill roller skating sport.

Specifications for the Malaysian market have yet to be confirmed, but global variants offer a good clue. The entry-level 32 kilowatt-hour battery is unlikely to make it here due to range limitations. Instead, we can expect BYD Malaysia to introduce either the 45 or 51 kWh versions, both offering over 300 KM of WLTP range.
Regardless of variant, the Atto 2 comes with a front-mounted motor producing 174 HP and 290 NM. It accelerates from 0-100 KM/H in 7.9 secs, making it lively enough for its segment and ideal for city use.

The interior is practical and well packaged, offering a good balance of space and features. Boot capacity starts at 400 litres and expands to 1,340 litres with the rear seats folded. In other markets, higher-spec variants include a larger 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen, ambient lighting, a surround view camera, wireless charging and heated seats.
A similar dual-variant setup is expected for Malaysia, though final specifications will only be confirmed at launch.

In China, the Atto 2 is priced from around RM62,000. But with Malaysia’s RM100,000 EV price floor still in effect, pricing here will be adjusted accordingly. Even so, it is still likely to become BYD Malaysia’s most affordable SUV, positioned below the Atto 3.
Perhaps more interesting is the space the Atto 2 occupies. With no direct EV competitors in its size and segment with models like the Kia EV3 and Hyundai Kona Electric not available here, the Atto 2’s main challengers are ICE models like the Proton X50 or the hybrid Chery Tiggo Cross and Honda HR-V.
That gives BYD a clear shot at tapping into a young, urban market looking for something different. The Atto 2 offers the right mix of compact size, modern styling, and EV performance to make it a compelling option for first-time EV buyers.
