Loke: KLIA Taxi Touting Betrays Nation’s Image

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has called taxi touting an act that betrays the country’s interests, stressing that it must be wiped out with firm action from all sides.

He said the problem has dragged on for more than a decade, especially at KLIA 1 and 2, where unsuspecting tourists are often overcharged. Instead of paying under RM100 for a ride to Kuala Lumpur, some are forced to fork out RM300–RM400.

Many share their frustrations online, leaving Malaysia with a damaged reputation and deterring future visitors.

To tackle this, Loke has directed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to go after touts by issuing summonses, seizing vehicles and charging offenders in court. He said the government’s aim is not to deny people a livelihood, but to ensure they follow the proper process.

He further added, becoming a licensed driver is now simpler, with the ministry easing requirements for PSV licences through a short course instead of a full theory test.

Loke added that a reliable transport system is essential for tourism, especially with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaching. He welcomed efforts by KLIA2 to improve services, including a taxi booking app, an e-hailing queue system and better waiting areas.
