Report: Proton, Perodua Leads new Car Sales For 2025

National marques Proton and Perodua continue to dominate new vehicle sales from Jan to July this year, with both automakers collectively holding 69% of the TIV.

Both Proton and Perodua have tightened their grip on new vehicle sales, reports the Business Times arm of local daily New Straits Times (NST) earlier today.
Citing recent data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the daily reports that both P1 and P2 collectively account for 69% of the total industry volume (TIV) for the first seven months of 2025 – up from 68% in the same period last year.
Unsurprisingly, Perodua leads the charge ahead of rivals Proton, having reportedly shifted a total of 199,674 units between Jan and July this year alone.

Perodua leads the charge here – unsurprisingly – with its sales totalling at 199,674 units between Jan and July this year. In turn, this sees P2 command 49% of the TIV mentioned – up from 48% recorded in the same period last year.
The report further adds that Rawang-based automaker sold 50% more cars month-on-month (MoM) and 4.3% more year-on-year (YoY) to 33,486 units in July 2025.
Locally, Proton places second behind Perodua with 82,955 units shifted thus far between Jan and July this year.

Tanjung Malim-based Proton, on the other hand, reportedly saw its TIV expanded by 4.3% YoY to 13,182 units as of July 2025. However, P1’s total local sales of 82,955 units charted between Jan and July this year marks a 4.7% reduction versus the previous year.
In fact, Proton’s July 2025 sales were mainly buoyed by both its refreshed X70 C-SUV and X50 B-SUV offerings, followed by its X90 D-SUV. Collectively, said trio of SUVs make up 31% of Proton’s total sales.

Perodua sales are supposed being fuelled by a shift by mid-market buyers seeking affordable alternatives ahead of the planned RON95 petrol subsidy rationalisation.

Citing Kenanga Research, the same report by NST also notes that Perodua’s continued lead was fuelled by sustained demand in the affordable segment thanks to attractive new model launches and a shift by mid-market buyers toward cheaper options.
The research firm also reportedly stressed much of latter was being driven by the expected RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation by end-2025.

NST's report also notes that Proton's trio of SUVs, namely the (clockwise) X70, X90 and recently launched X50 facelift, collectively account for 31% of P1 total local sales thus far.

Research notes by MBSB Research (formerly MIDF Research) was also quoted, specifically on the prediction that sales momentum will remain strong this month (Aug) thanks to both improved stock levels and Merdeka sales promotions.
"In addition, with the shift to an open market value-based excise duty for CKD vehicles scheduled for January 2026, we expect a degree of frontloading in purchases in the second half of 2025," adds MSBB Research further.
Furthermore, the firm also reportedly expects overall TIV to ease this year on the back of a strong base. The firm’s 2025 forecast remains at 792,000 units, which is 3% less YoY, and it is largely aligned with MAA's estimate of a 4.5% reduction to 780,000 units.
