New Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition Special Sees Just 50 Units Planned

Announced earlier this week was the new Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition special based on the current W223/V223-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Even in its most ‘basic’ form like the refreshed S580e with EQ Hybrid Technology that launched locally last week, there’s no denying that the seventh-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223 and V223) is a very posh flagship limo in any form.

Of course, those seeking true opulence will want to opt for either the S580 or S680 Maybach renditions of which. Now, the latter range-topping variant serves as the base for a brand new limited-run special celebrating the three-point star’s V12 mill.

Besides its V12 heart, what sets this special apart too are various exclusive touches done by the marque's Manufaktur arm.

Aptly christened as the Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition, this special stands as a special homage of the brand’s V12 engine heritage. Fun fact: Maybach models sold in the 1920s and 1930s were primed with V12 mills that had 7.0-litre and 8.0-litre displacements.

To celebrate that history, this special firstly packs the M279 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12 petrol heart plonked up front – currently Mercedes-Benz’s ‘coveted’ range-topping V12 mill. Offering up to 603 hp and 900 Nm, this mill is no slouch indeed.

Besides the distinct two-tone olive-obsidian black paintjob with silver pinstripe, the famed double-M C-pillar emblem gets an addition '12' medal handmade from 24-carat and boasts diamond engraving too.

Besides powertrain, what helps set the Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition apart too are a slew of exclusive aesthetic touches done by the marque's Manufaktur arm. Key to which is the subtle yet distinct two-tone olive metallic and obsidian black paint scheme.

Separating both tones is a Rolls-Royce-esque silver metallic pinstripe. Altogether, Mercedes-Benz says this special paint scheme and finish takes about 10 days to complete – roughly twice as long versus the regular Maybach S-Class’s two-tone.

Striking - and divisive - too are the forged five-spoke rolling stock this special rolls on, which are dressed in the same olive hue as the exterior's top half.

Next comes real gold accents inside and out. Starting with the famed double-M C-pillar emblem, it’s now joined by a hand-crafted 24-carat gold ‘12’ medal ring with diamond engraving. It also features tiny ‘V’ logos – a nod to the engine’s cylinder arrangement.

Moving to rolling stock, these forged wheels are finished in the same olive hue as the exterior’s upper half. What will divide opinion though are their five-spoke design – you’d either love or hate these.

Equally special on board is the saddle brown headliner and seat upholstery, walnut wood trim, numbered badge in the dash, as well as the golden inlays in the rear seat console.

Moving to the cabin and this special gets a diamond-quilted headliner in saddle brown to match the seat upholstery. Walnut wood trim is present in the steering wheel, followed by a numbered badge in the centre console.

The back seat, on the other hand, sees the console separating it feature golden inlay too. This, Mercedes-Benz adds, take up to seven days to complete.

Exclusive 'extras' bundled into the sale of each unit too are a set of silver-plated champagne flutes, as well as a key gift box with matching key ring.

No doubt, all this added bling does add weight– this special tips the scale at 2,365 KG. Nonetheless, with its V12 mill detailed earlier, it will still despatch 0-100 km/h sprints in just 4.5 secs before hitting an electronically-capped 250 km/h V-Max.

Just 50 units of the Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition will be built. All will be offered in selected markets at undisclosed prices.

Lastly, in terms of price and availability, it’s unsurprising to note they’re both high and rare respectively, with the latter perhaps driving the former too – typical with any limited-run special as such.
