Geely Starray EM-i PHEV SUV Production Starts in Indonesia

Geely has started the CKD production of its Starray EM-i PHEV in Indonesia, bound for export to overseas markets.
Geely has further expanded its venture in Southeast Asia by starting a new CKD operation in the region for its Geely Starray EM-i. Despite having one of its own joint ventures in this region, the Chinese automaker has elected to choose Indonesia as its CKD base for this plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossover.

As reported by CarNewsChina, the move also marks the Starray EM-i entering overseas mass production, where the Indonesian CKD model will be heading to several overseas markets in the future. This CKD plant is located in Purwakata, Indonesia, where it will also assemble other Geely models like the EX5 EV and the Geome Xingyuan EV hatch—the latter set to debut in Malaysia as the Proton e.MAS 5.

Known as the Geely Starship 7 EM-i in native China, the Starray EM-i is essentially a PHEV twin to the Geely Galaxy E5, also known as the Geely EX5 or the Proton e.MAS 7, depending on where you live. This PHEV crossover is set to enter several overseas markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, South Africa, Mexico, and many more.

First launched in China late last year, the Starray EM-i underpins the same GEA platform as its popular EV twin, while featuring Geely’s proprietary Thor EM-i PHEV system. It features a 1.5-litre nat-asp petrol engine as the core, plus an electric motor rated at 215 hp (160 kW) integrated inside the electric Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (E-DHT).
With an 18.4 kWh LFP battery pack, Geely claims the Starray EM-i is good for up to 1,420 km of comprehensive travel range, plus a low fuel consumption of 3.75 litre per 100 km—both based on the more lenient CLTC standards.

Dimension-wise, the Starray EM-i is slightly larger than its battery electric twin, spanning 4,740 mm long, 1,905 mm wide, and 1,685 mm tall with a 2,755 mm wheelbase. And just like its fellow Geely siblings, the Starray EM-i features a Flyme Auto infotainment suite inside, which includes the same 16-speaker Flyme Sound audio system found on the Geely EX5/Proton e.MAS 7.

With the Starray EM-i CKD operations already commenced in this region, it begs the question of when this PHEV crossover will head here. Earlier this year, Malaysian media representatives were brought to the Geely R&D centre in Hangzhou to check out the Starray EM-i, so there’s a chance that it will arrive here sometime in the future, perhaps as a Proton model.
Speaking of Proton, the national automaker recently opened its first electric vehicle production facility in Proton City Tanjung Malim, with both the e.MAS 7 and the upcoming e.MAS 5 set to be assembled there, at least for now.
