Mazda officially presented the all-new third-generation CX-5 crossover to the public for the first time at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (JMS2025) this week.

As reported prior, the new CX-5 debuted globally with an all-new look plus a host of other refinements and changes all around. This appearance at JMS 2025 gives us a clearer look at this next-gen C-SUV ahead of market rollout.

The model shown in Tokyo was in European specification, highlighting the brand’s evolved design and upgraded technology as it transitions into a more premium, digital era. Production is set to begin soon, with global sales starting in 2026 and Europe receiving it slightly earlier towards the end of 2025.

For Malaysia, industry watchers expect Bermaz Auto (BAuto) to introduce the model in the second half of 2026, likely as a locally assembled (CKD) model given the current CX-5’s strong success in the segment.

Slightly larger than before, the new CX-5 now measures 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,695 mm tall, with a wheelbase extended by 115 mm versus the current model to 2,815 mm. The platform remains a refined evolution of its predecessor, continuing with MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension for balanced ride and handling.

Powering the European model - and possibly Malaysia-bound versions - is Mazda’s mild-hybrid (MHEV) 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. While output figures weren’t disclosed, the setup focuses on smoothness, efficiency and Mazda’s signature driving feel.

That aside, the Hiroshima-rooted brand is also expected to retain its current 2.0 and 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engines for a wide range of markets.

Design remains at the forefront of the new CX-5’s appeal. Mazda has evolved its Kodo design philosophy into a sportier, more expressive form while maintaining the understated elegance that defines the brand.

The lower nose and wider stance give the SUV a confident, athletic look, while the rear takes cues from the larger CX-80 with sleeker horizontal taillights and a bold Mazda script across the tailgate.

Inside, the cabin adopts a cleaner, more digital-focused design inspired by Mazda’s premium SUV lineup. The familiar command dial is gone, replaced by a new 12.9 or 15.6-inch infotainment system powered by Google, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and complemented by a 10.25-inch digital cluster.

Practicality has improved too, with a larger 583-litre luggage area that expands to 2,019 litres with the rear seats folded. The longer wheelbase brings more legroom and easier access through wider-opening rear doors, complemented by a lower loading height for added convenience.

With its sharper design, advanced tech and refined dynamics, the third-generation CX-5 stands as one of Mazda’s most significant models yet. If introduced here next year, it is poised to continue its strong run in Malaysia, appealing to buyers who value sophistication, performance and everyday versatility.
