JPJ Seizes Fortuner With Fake Plates Tied to 42 AwAS Summonses

A motivational speaker was arrested near the Behrang R&R after authorities found his Toyota Fortuner bore another person’s registration number.
The Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) Highway Patrol Unit (UPLR) detained him around 9.30PM last Saturday. Checks showed the SUV had two different plates — PRF in front and RF at the back, the latter was registered under another individual.
The RF plate carried 42 AwAS summonses worth RM12,600 since 2023. Investigators believe the false plate was used to avoid penalties.

JPJ Enforcement Senior Director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the SUV was seized for verification, including tests by the Chemistry Department. He added the suspect, in his 50s, had also used fake addresses on his licence and ID, which even included a hotel.
The vehicle was also linked to speeding offences of up to 160km/h at several locations. The case emerged after the RF plate owner lodged a complaint over a blacklist notice, and summonses will be reassigned to the actual offender.

The case is being probed under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for displaying false registration numbers. The SUV was also seized under Section 64(1) of the Act. If convicted, the suspect faces a fine of RM5,000 to RM20,000, jail of one to five years, or both.
Muhammad Kifli warned JPJ will not tolerate registration fraud, saying it undermines road safety and system integrity.
