Ops Lancar Activated For Deepavali Traffic Surge
About 2.1 million vehicles are expected on Malaysian roads during the Deepavali holidays, with police launching Ops Lancar from Oct 17 to 21 to ensure smoother traffic flow and public safety.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said 500 officers will be deployed nationwide to manage congestion, particularly along major highways, city routes, and tourist areas.
"We expect about 2.1 million vehicles will be on the road during this period. Some 500 personnel will be deployed for Ops Lancar.
We will focus on major highways, city raids as well as tourist destinations," he said.
Yusri stated personnel would be stationed at hotspots and accident-prone areas to maintain order and safety, adding that the department is waiting for further instructions from the Transport Ministry on possible restrictions for commercial vehicles.
"Our priority is to ensure all road users get to their destinations safely," he said.
Besides managing traffic, JSPT teams will also conduct joint operations with other agencies to address criminal activities along highways.
"We conduct spot checks on suspected vehicles and have found success in seizing drugs. Recently we stopped a car and seized drugs worth over RM12mil," Yusri noted.
He added that the media plays an important role in supporting enforcement efforts.
"Our goals are aligned as we want to preserve safety and public security. The media has been essential in highlighting operations and creating more awareness on road safety," he concluded.
