China will roll out its first national solid-state battery standard in July 2026, a significant step as the technology moves closer to commercial use. The China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) said the standard will establish a formal framework for how solid-state batteries are defined within the EV industry.

The draft GB/T document, titled “Solid-state batteries for electric vehicles – Part 1: Terminology and Classification,” was completed in Dec 2025. Public consultation ended on February 28, 2026. CATARC has also conducted verification tests to refine assessment methods and technical indicators.

Final review is expected in April, with official release scheduled for July.

For now, the standard focuses on definitions. It will clearly distinguish between liquid batteries, semi-solid (solid-liquid) batteries and fully solid-state batteries.

Additional phases are expected to introduce technical requirements, including guidance on solid electrolytes and other core components, along with performance and safety benchmarks.

The regulatory push comes as Chinese automakers and battery makers ramp up development. Solid-state batteries promise higher energy density and improved fire resistance compared to conventional lithium-ion packs, with targets already exceeding 300 Wh/kg in testing.

Dongfeng is among those advancing the technology. It has been testing a 350 Wh/kg solid-state battery in its eπ 007 electric sedan, claiming a potential range of over 1,000 km. The pack is also said to retain 72% of its capacity at -30°C. Mass production, however, has been delayed to 2027.

On the research front, Chinese scientists recently developed a silicon nanowire anode with a porous “breathable” structure. The design is aimed at improving safety, boosting energy density and enhancing cycle life.

Major players including BYD, Geely, Chery, GAC, Dongfeng and FAW are expected to begin installation trials of all-solid-state batteries next year as development progresses toward large-scale deployment.
