Malaysians traveling between the Klang Valley and the East Coast are officially one step closer to ditching the dreaded holiday traffic jams. Ahead of its highly anticipated January 2027 commercial launch, the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) has officially revealed its frontline crew uniforms.

Dressed in cultural heritage aesthetics, the newly unveiled outfits mark a major visual milestone for the 665 km mega-rail network. But the uniforms are just a glimpse of what is to come. From prayer facilities to uninterrupted connectivity, passengers have a lot to look forward to when stepping on board the 160 km/h passenger trains.

1. Cultural Elegance: Songket & Batik Crew Uniforms

The newly revealed uniforms come in two distinct versions, one for the onboard train crew and another for station service staff. Both designs heavily incorporate songket and floral batik motifs directly derived from the official ECRL logo.

According to ECRL, the songket represents Malay heritage and grandeur, while the vibrant batik elements pay tribute to the local artistic traditions of the East Coast.

“Inspiration from the ECRL logo is translated into a dynamic arrangement of flower motifs against the backdrop of track elements, symbolising movement, continuity and networks that connect people, communities and regions,” ECRL says.

2. Onboard Bilik Solat With Wuduk Area

Understanding the needs of long-distance commuters, ECRL's Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) passenger trains come built-in with a dedicated bilik solat (prayer room) complete with a proper wuduk (ablution) facility. This ensures Muslim travelers can fulfill their prayers comfortably without needing to disembark during cross-state journeys.

3. Onboard F&B Counter & Generous Storage Spaces

Each 6-car EMU train is designed to comfortably ferry 425 passengers in a full economy configuration. For long journeys, carriages feature a dedicated onboard Food & Beverage (F&B) counter for quick snacks and beverages.

To help travelers store their belongings conveniently, every carriage includes spacious overhead compartments alongside generous floor-standing luggage racks for larger suitcases.

4. Reclining Seats, Reversible Group Seating & In-Seat Power Outlets

Designed with comfort in mind, seats can recline for a relaxed angle during multi-hour trips. The economy cabin also features reversible cross seats, enabling passengers to rotate their chairs to face each other—making it ideal for families or groups traveling together.

Additionally, seats feature a fold-down tray table on the front seatback, and each row is equipped with a socket underneath the front seat for charging devices via standard plug or USB.

5. Real-Time Passenger Information Systems & Full 4G/5G Connectivity

To keep commuters updated on route progress, onboard Passenger Information Systems provide real-time updates and announcements throughout the entire journey.

Furthermore, passengers will not have to worry about network blackouts while passing through remote areas or tunnels. Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has officially appointed Maxis Berhad as the mobile network infrastructure provider to deploy seamless 4G and 5G coverage along the entire 665 km alignment.

6. 160km/h Speeds For A Faster 'Balik Kampung'

Powered by 11 six-car EMU train sets, the 160 km/h rail network will drastically cut travel times between the West Coast and East Coast. Operational launch is officially slated for January 2027, meaning East Coast folks can bypass the Karak Highway traffic jams just in time for Hari Raya Aidilfitri!

7. Fully Accessible Facilities For OKU & Passengers With Special Needs

ECRL is designed to ensure a seamless, user-friendly journey for all passengers from station to train. Stations and train cars feature dedicated accessibility infrastructure, including:

  • Mobility & Navigation: Tactile paving tiles for visually impaired commuters, elevators with low-positioned buttons, and Braille markings for lift controls.
  • Service Counters & Restrooms: Low-level service counters for wheelchair users and fully equipped, disabled-friendly toilets onboard and at stations.
  • Station Accessibility: Lifts, escalators, covered walkways, and organized drop-off/pick-up zones to ensure smooth transit for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (OKU).
