Prasarana Unveils Transformative Sustainability Blueprint

The nation's transportation system will undergo a revolution thanks to the recent release of the Prasarana Sustainability Blueprint 2023–2030 (the Blueprint), a comprehensive roadmap that demonstrates the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and societal well-being.
The blueprint, according to group CEO and president Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, is a detailed road map that shows the company's path to a more sustainable, just, and prosperous future.
“We are paving the way for a Malaysia that is powered by clean energy, connected by a robust and inclusive public transport system, and guided by a shared vision of a sustainable future,” he added.
Prasarana's commitment is outlined in the blueprint and is centered around four main objectives: moving toward low-carbon mobility; maintaining safety and security standards; increasing productivity; and enhancing the community and business ethics.
The company is already working hard to fulfill its commitment to electrify its bus fleet. From the current 15 EV buses on the BRT Sunway Line, the company plans to add 100 more EV buses to its larger fleet by 2026, and 481 more by 2030, with the ultimate goal of going 100% electric by 2037.
This is in addition to the 150 EV feeder buses planned for the upcoming LRT Shah Alam Line (LRT3).
The company has begun a comprehensive energy audit in which it has identified opportunities to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2030, resulting in a 15% reduction in carbon emissions. Energy-saving measures will be implemented at 103 different locations, including rail and bus depots, stations, and hubs. Prasarana is also working with Sunway Group to install solar PV panels at depots and stations along the BRT Sunway Line, which will generate 0.8MW of clean energy. The solar PV panels are expected to be operational by Q2 2024, saving 696 tonnes of CO2 equivalents in the first year. The estimated cost savings over the next 25 years are RM5 million.

According to Prasarana, its daily ridership eliminates 271,429 cars from the road, which is the same as planting 3.2 million trees a year in carbon avoidance. The company projects that this impact will increase by 99.7% by 2028 as more cars are expected to be taken off the road in conjunction with the growth of the rail and bus networks, which will increase ridership.
