VW Teases Special Golf GTI Model Ahead of May 31 Debut

Volkswagen teases a new mysterious Golf GTI model ahead of its debut at the Nurburgring on May 31.
Although an all-electric successor is already in the pipeline, it seems like Volkswagen is yet to give up on the ICE-powered Golf GTI model, with the German automaker set to unveil a new version of said hot-hatch model. Set to debut at the upcoming 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance race later in May 31, this new GTI model is said to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Golf’s iconic nameplate.
Unveiled in a short teaser video posted by VW CEO Thomas Schafer via his LinkedIn profile, it appears that this mysterious Golf GTI model has been pixelated, with said model being recorded doing a lap around the infamous Nurburgring circuit, specifically on the circuit’s most famous corner, the Carousel.

While nothing much can be derived from the pixelated car, the final few frames of the video revealed a text that reads, ’50 Years of Golf’. This automatically leads to speculation that this special model could commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Golf nameplate, possibly a sportier GTI version of the Edition 50 Golf we saw earlier this year.

The Volkswagen Golf Mk8 GTI Clubsport 45 was previously revealed during the Golf's 45th anniversary.
Volkswagen has always celebrated the anniversary of its most popular nameplate by creating a limited-edition special model, with the latest one being the Golf GTI Clubsport 45 during its 45th birthday a few years ago. With said model featuring some additional aero bits and a slight performance bump, perhaps we can expect the same treatment to be given for this 50th anniversary model.

Newly-updated Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8.5
One thing’s for sure is that this new special model will be based on the newly-updated Golf GTI Mk8.5. Revealed earlier this year, this facelifted GTI now only comes exclusively with a seven-speed DSG gearbox, with the six-speed manual option dropped from its lineup. More importantly, the GTI’s 2.0-litre 4-cyl TGDi mill has been tweaked slightly for the facelifted model, now outputting 261 HP.

Should VW decide to launch a special Clubsport 50 version of the GTI, then we can expect this front-wheel-drive (FWD) hot-hatch to boast a total system output closer to the 300-HP mark, with the previous Golf GTI Clubsport 45 already managing to deliver 292 HP.

And VW’s decision to unveil the special Golf GTI at the Nurburgring is also not a mere coincidence, with the automaker poised to dethrone the enigmatic Honda Civic Type R FL5 as the fastest production FWD car to lap the infamous ‘Green Hell’ circuit—a title once held by the Golf GTI Clubsport S.
