Another Mulliner Division’s Best, Bentley Orlando’s Bespoke Space-Themed Bentayga Speed
A superb individual example featuring the craftsmanship from the Mulliner division, Bentley Orlando commissions a bespoke space-themed Bentayga Speed for one of its customers.
Bentley Orlando’s general manager, Joseph Wierda, expressed, “The Space Coast in central Florida has long been established as the world’s gateway to explore the universe above, so space travel and exploration were the perfect themes to inspire this unique car. Just as space is limitless, the opportunities for customisation with the Mulliner design team were only limited by our collective imagination.”
To begin with, its exterior paint shade of Cypress is famously familiar from the launch of the first-generation Continental GT in 2003.
The Dark Metallic Grey with subtle Green undertones creates a dark, stone-like outlook, which is enhanced with the Blackline Specification, replacing all exterior brightware with Gloss Black version.
Orange Flame accents to the gloss carbon fibre Styling Specification take inspiration from comet dust trails, adding a bright contrast to the Cypress paintwork.
Warping inside the cosmically crafted cabin, the first notable feature visible when opening the doors are the illuminated tread plates depicting planets orbiting a solar system.
Next, attention is drawn to the Orange bezels surrounding the Galaxy Stone fascias set into the dashboard and on the door waist-rails.
It has smooth bright surfaces that differentiate the Dark Grey tactile stone, emphasising the highly bespoke nature of this commission.
Beautifully, the cabin is trimmed in Beluga and Porpoise, providing a dark, night-sky-esque backdrop for the accents of colour.
Unique satin black speaker grilles of the ‘Naim for Bentley’ sound system discreetly hides in the shadows, with the Naim centre badges illuminated, resembling stars in the night.
Moreover, the bespoke fluting in the door recesses can also be seen emanating from the bright Orange Bentley seat emblem towards the outer edges of the shoulder area.
Said seats are further ornamented with Orange micro piping along the edges and encircles the floor-mats. Plus, the largest splashes of Orange can be found nearest the driver, like solar eruptions.
Last but not least, the centre spoke of the steering wheel and gear lever are the brightest areas within the interior, with both trimmed in a beautiful contrasting hide.
“The rise in popularity of our bespoke commissioning service is testament to the skills of both our Mulliner Design team and the craftspeople working tirelessly to deliver any request. Our Personal Commissioning Guide is the launch pad for so many customer journeys, and this space-themed Bentayga Speed is a stunning example of what’s possible,” remarked Bentley’s head of mulliner commercial, Paul Dickinson.
Matching its planetary aesthetics, the Bentayga Speed has a rocket-like performance that revs up the Bentayga’s already extraordinary abilities to new heights.
Peeking under the hood, it harbours Bentley’s 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged engine that delivers 635 PS (626 bhp) of peak power.
Thrillingly, effortless acceleration is assured with its 900 Nm of torque that revs between 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm.
Packing all that power, it does 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in just 3.9 seconds, while hitting a maximum speed of 190 mph (306 km/h).
Being an enabler to its outstanding power, the Bentayga Speed is equipped with four on-road Drive Dynamics modes.
Common ones being Comfort and Sport, while Bentley Mode is the balanced default of Bentley’s chassis team in Crewe, Custom Mode is the driver’s individual configuration.
Notably, the Sport mode has been calibrated to improve response from the W12 engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission.
Paired together with the air suspension system and Bentley Dynamic Ride, the effect is a more dynamic and engaging drive.
For those who are unaware, Bentley Dynamic Ride is the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises an unrivalled 48V system.
This system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.
On top of that, Bentley’s Torque Vectoring by Brake system has been recalibrated for the Bentayga Speed, which has made it even more responsive to drive.
Meaning, the SUV is able to steadily brake the inside rear wheel at corner entry to sharpen the front axle turn-in.
That’s not all, the Bentayga Speed also comes with optional carbon ceramic brakes, significantly the largest and most powerful brakes available from Bentley.
They have a maximum braking torque of 6,000 Nm, engineered to withstand temperatures up to 1,000 °C and also provide a weight saving of more than 20 kg over iron brakes.
All in all, by the start of 2022 approximately 28,500 Bentaygas have been produced and it has expanded the luxury SUV sector exactly as the Continental GT did.
In short, as Bentley’s best-selling model to date, it seems like for the Bentayga, maybe the sky is not the limit.
