Report: Next-Gen Porsche 911 GT2 RS Will Be A 700 HP Hybrid

2018 Porsche 911 (991) GT2 RS.

With both a GT3 and hotter GT3 RS versions of the 992-gen Porsche 911 now launched, the next step will see the famed Stuttgart-based sportscar marque expand further with a new GT2 RS special performance model. But unlike past iterations, Autocar UK reports that this new one will transform into a 700 HP hybrid.

If this pans out as reported, it will mark the first step towards electrification for the famed 911 sportscar lineage. Additionally, Autocar UK’s report also notes that the upcoming 992-gen 911 GT2 RS will harness hybrid tech from said LMP1 – and subsequent unrestricted ‘Evo’ version – racer to beef up its performance further.

Notably, the new hybrid 911 GT2 RS will continue employing a signature 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six mill which, in the current 911 Turbo S, already delivers as high as 640 HP and 800 NM. Added electrification could see those figures raise as high as 700 HP whilst also adding a further 250 NM of torque – totalling over 1,000 NM.

2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS when it was launched in Malaysia back in 2018 priced from RM2.9 million.

Altogether, Porsche aims to have the new GT2 RS outperform the current and outgoing GT2 RS. For reference, the latter develops 700 HP and 750 NM to drive the rear wheels, allowing 0-100 KM/H in 2.8 seconds plus a V-max of 340 KM/H. When it was launched locally back in 2018, it also commanded a hefty starting price tag of RM2.9 million through Porsche Malaysia (Sime Darby Auto Performance).

Similar to the C8 Corvette E-Ray, the hybrid Porsche 911 GT2 RS won't be a plug-in type hybrid (PHEV), offering limited electric range. Instead, the electric motor is purely tasked towards enhancing performance, and it will underpin a 400-volt battery tech instead of the Taycan’s (and Audi e-tron GT’s) 800-volt type, and an air-cooled battery that recharges solely through energy recuperation.

Said battery will be positioned behind the front seats to keep the centre of gravity similar to the regular 911. It will also reportedly offer a rear-biased weight distribution ratio of 39:61.

One of the energy recuperation tech it will reportedly harness is a small turbine in the exhaust system that spools during acceleration to generate electricity. This is tech that’s lifted directly from the 919 Hybrid LMP1 racer mentioned. Porsche has also reportedly filed patents for an electric turbocharger to replace a fan as it can generate air to cool the batteries.

Presently, Porsche has kept mum regarding details of its next 911 GT2 RS, but the model is expected to launch as early as 2026.
