Stylish One-Off Rolls Royce Phantom Syntopia Revealed

British luxury marque Rolls Royce recently partnered with fashion designer and mogul Iris van Herpen, resulting in the creation of a one-off Phantom Syntopia.

Member of the Parisian Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, van Herpen spent the last four years working with Rolls-Royce to create this bespoke Phantom. Much inspiration was taken from van Harpen’s 2018 collection, which saw garments designed using the principles of biomimicry. She then endeavoured to apply the same concept to the car.

On the exterior, this Phantom dons a ‘Weaving Water’ theme, most prominent of which present on the front hood. Based around a one-off colour seen as Liquid Noir, the lustrous shade of black has hues of purple, black, magenta, and gold, depending on the angle at which it’s viewed.

Creating the colour has taken RR’s over 3,000 hours of assessment and confirmation that led the Spirit of Ectasy brand to instill a new technique for applying a clear coat over its durable black coating. Furthermore, the method allows it to redeploy the pigment to create a motif in the paint.

The auto-fashion inspired car lures most of its cabin space, which is something to highlight on here. Certainly, the roof panel is an artwork in and of itself, made from a single piece of leather chosen from a stock of 1,000 skin features, each being symmetrically cut and precisely positioned to reveal a woven nylon fabric.

In case you were wondering, this technique was previously employed in van Herpen's Embossed Sounds collection. It has been meticulously assembled here around a 162-piece petal motif made of glass organza (a sheer fabric with body and a shine to it) that was installed by members of the fashion designer's own team.

Meanwhile the whole ceiling is finished with RR’s fibre optic star pattern and took over 700 hours of work to complete. The lower half of the interior is instigated by RR’s antique vehicles in which the front seats were made of hard-wearing leather, and the rear seats crafted in finer fabrics.

On top of that, the front seats are finished in Magic Grey leather, which has glossy veneer, while the rear seats are covered in a silk blend fabric, whose design is inspired by light’s reflection on the water during nighttime.

Beyond the physical materials that went into the Phantom Syntopia, RR’s also created a signature scent for the car. The Dutch couturier went at it again by adding elements of fleur-de-lis  mixed with cedarwood, hints of leather, as well as mild lemon and rose from Patagonia.

To match this one-off Phantom, its new owner will also get a one-off garment designed by Iris van Herpen herself. Said dress sports a sculptural design that echoes the weaving water motif of the car and features all of the same materials and techniques used inside of it.
